National Weather Center Library Goes Live With Evergreen
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    Norcross, GA – January 21, 2009

The National Weather Center Library, located on the Norman campus of the University of Oklahoma, has gone live with Evergreen open-source library automation software. Equinox Software, Inc., the support and development company for Evergreen, provided bumper-to-bumper support for the migration and is now providing 24/7 data hosting and support.
Ginny Dietrich, director of the National Weather Center Library, praised the migration process, noting that “Evergreen has a streamlined interface and more enhanced subject searching options than our previous catalog software.” The new catalog also seamlessly integrates with the library’s 3M self-check system, demonstrating Evergreens’ interoperability with a wide variety of traditional and cutting-edge library services.
“The National Weather Center Library is a prime example of Evergreen’s flexibility and strength,” said Brad LaJeunesse, Equinox company president. “This special library joins almost 300 public, academic, and school libraries running Evergreen. Their decision to host their data with Equinox gives the National Weather Center peace of mind and the ability to focus on doing what they do best—delivering their unique, nationally-significant services.”
The National Weather Center is a cooperative effort of state, federal and academic organizations dedicated to improving understanding of the Earth's atmosphere. The NWC Library supports the educational, research, outreach, and operations missions carried out by the organizations in the National Weather Center, and also supports the wider meteorological community in Oklahoma. The library has approximately 4,000 bibliographic items and is on the web at http://library.nwc.ou.edu/ . Their new online catalog can be viewed at http://nws.evergreencatalog.com.

    About Evergreen
Evergreen is consortial-quality, open-source library software initially developed to support Georgia PINES, a resource-sharing consortium with over 270 public libraries. Evergreen was designed from the ground up to be robust, fault-tolerant, service-oriented, and standards-based. Evergreen nimbly meets the needs of very large, high-transaction, multi-site consortia while elegantly scaling down to the smallest library sites.
The growing, multinational Evergreen development community has shepherded Evergreen through a series of releases that have further strengthened Evergreen’s consortial qualities while adding popular and useful functionality. The 2.0 release, due out mid-2009, will feature acquisitions, serials, and reserves.
From its debut in September 2006, Evergreen has earned acclaim and praise from users worldwide. Evergreen has received significant attention, including a Technology Collaboration Award from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Additional Evergreen implementations include consortial projects such as Michigan Evergreen, Evergreen Indiana, and British Columbia SITKA, and libraries such as Kent County Public Library in Maryland, Marshall Public Library in Missouri, and the University of Prince Edward Island. Norcross, Ga. – The Integrated Technology Group (ITG), a division of Vernon Library Supplies, Inc., has partnered with SirsiDynix to install radio frequency identification (RFID) technology at the Albany Public Library in Oregon and the Jessamine County Public Library in Kentucky.

"ITG and SirsiDynix have worked closely to create custom solutions for both the Albany Public Library and the Jessamine County Public Library,” said Ken Evans, vice president of sales for ITG. “The new RFID systems will provide each library with the ability to increase staff efficiency and improve patron services.”

The Albany Public Library is implementing Apex XpressCheck™ patron self-service kiosks, Apex RFID™ security pedestals and a seven-bin Vista FullSort™ automated material handling (AMH) system from ITG, all of which work in conjunction with the integrated library system from SirsiDynix. The new system is being installed in a building that has recently been gutted and remodeled to house the library.

“With a newly renovated and expanded library building nearing completion, Albany Public Library seized the opportunity to implement RFID technology to increase staff efficiency and enhance service for patrons,” said David Tuttle, senior market consultant: RFID & Patron Self Service for SirsiDynix. “As a SirsiDynix Strategic Partner, ITG provided the perfect synergy between the library’s automation system and this new technology.”

The Jessamine County Public Library is rolling out three Apex XpressCheck™ patron self-service kiosks and eight RFID work stations for staff, as well as the integrated library system from SirsiDynix.

“By implementing RFID technology, we expect a monetary return on investment within five years through loss prevention and the fact that the number of circulation personnel will remain static for those five years,” said Dr. Ron Critchfield, executive director of Jessamine County Public Library. “As an intangible ROI, the value added services to our customers will be immediately beneficial and will illustrate to customers the ever increasing quality of service provided by the Jessamine County Public Library.”

Boot Camp on Online Production for Librarians Announced

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    January 16, 2009

LAS VEGAS—Erie Looking Productions announces today that it is arranging an intensive training workshop geared to the needs of librarians. The workshop would involve theory as well as actual hands-on practice producing online content. Our program is focused on being a less high-pressure learning environment than that found at larger conferences such as Computers in Libraries.

The event will run from 8 AM until 5 PM Pacific Time on Saturday, February 21st. There will be a complimentary catered buffet luncheon provided for attendees. Potential attendees are asked to advise in advance relative to particular dietary concerns. Recommended airlines for use in reaching Las Vegas are Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines. A two night stay at the Fiesta Henderson was found to cost USD$100 although prices can change with time. Staying there or at any other “locals casino” for Friday and Saturday would be the most cost-effective course for lodging.

The workshop is planned to start with an informational and eye opening Internet security lecture by a special guest that will include practical demonstrations. Mike Kellat of Erie Looking Productions, creator of the segment series known as “Tech for Techies”, will talk about the mechanics of production and provide opportunities for librarians to try out the basic tools of production that were not taught in library school. Stephen Kellat, the writer/presenter of LISTen: The LISNews.org Podcast, will discuss planning content releases and will engage in role-playing exercises with participants relative to the process of securing program guests. After navigating the realm of public relations gatekeepers and learning how many times his background has been investigated in the past twelve months, Kellat will share insights about what it takes to secure guests and successfully navigate PR gatekeepers. Subject to the availability of time, participants will have the opportunity to help create an episode of LISTen as part of their experiential learning.

Beyond travel and lodging costs, the event will cost USD$249 per person. A non-refundable deposit of USD$100 will be required by February 9th to secure a space. Space is limited and unless significant demand requires it there will not be room for more than fifteen librarians to attend. Librarians located in the Commonwealth of Nations are specifically encouraged to attend the event.

”Lectures at CiL and elsewhere are great. Lectures can be cool. For creative enterprises like new media, hands-on experience is a better way to learn that is worth a fortune,” Stephen Kellat remarked about the event.

Pamela Munson is coordinating the business side of the event for Erie Looking Productions. She is also the designated point of contact for registration. Mrs. Munson can be reached via electronic mail at pammunson@gmail.com. Potential event attendees must include “ELPEVENT” on the subject line to keep their messages out of spam traps.

Here is what a few people are saying about DIG YOUR JOB, the not-so-serious career handbook.

“I’m astounded by the amount of information in this book. I can see

referring back to this over years; I can see printing out pages to talk

over with people when addressing a problem. It’s a terrifi c resource

for small business people and for people in the workforce.”

    – Becky McCray, Consultant to Small Towns, Small Businesses,
    www.SmallBizSurvival.com

“DIG YOUR JOB packs in more than two hundred quick-read, minilessons

from someone who has built a bunch of companies and

understands jobs. Reading this book is a short time investment that

will make a long-term difference in your career.”
    – Penelope Trunk, www.BrazenCareerist.com

“DIG YOUR JOB is like having a mentor in a box. Hoffman picks up where

schools leave off. He offers hundreds of ideas to ease the transition into the

workforce and make those fi rst few jobs as successful as possible.”

    – Randy Street, Author of the New York Times best selling book,
Who: The A Method for Hiring.

“Reading this book is like sitting down with a business executive over some

barbecue and hearing his most sage advice and insights about carving out

a successful career. While G.L. Hoffman can be very funny and informal, his

wicked intelligence about work deserves your total seriousness.”
