New Partnership Gives ASECS Members Access to the World’s Largest Collection on the Eighteenth-Century, Advancing Research and Instruction of the Period

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. & Fishkill, N.Y. – July 28, 2021 – Gale, a Cengage company, has partnered with the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS), the world’s largest organization of eighteenth-century scholars, to provide its North American members[i] with access to Gale’s Eighteenth-Century Collections Online (ECCO). Now ASECS members have access to the most comprehensive online historical archive on the eighteenth-century, enabling scholarship, enhanced teaching and advanced study of the era.

“ECCO is an essential resource for scholars of the eighteenth-century, but many people working in the field do not currently have access to it. They have to travel across the world to research libraries to view and study eighteenth-century collections, which can be very expensive,” said Mark Boonshoft, executive director at ASECS. “By providing online access to ECCO to our members in North America, we help ameliorate this inequity and better support research and teaching on the eighteenth-century. We are thrilled to partner with Gale to make this happen.”

ECCO contains every significant English-language and foreign-language title printed in the United Kingdom between the years 1701 and 1800, offering scholars full-text searching across 26 million pages of books and directories, bibles, sheet music, sermons, advertisements and works by both celebrated and lesser¬known authors. Expanding the ECCO archive, the titles in Part II have an emphasis on literature, social science, and religion. It also includes nearly fifty thousand titles and seven million pages from the library holdings of the British Library, the Bodleian Library, University of Cambridge, the National Library of Scotland and the Ransom Center at the University of Texas.

With ASECS members coming from a wide range of disciplines and professions beyond academia, ECCO access will:

    • Put the world’s largest archive on the eighteenth-century in the hands of hundreds of scholars, creating greater public awareness and understanding of the eighteen-century world.

    • Provides access to independent scholars (those without university affiliation), making it easier for them to conduct research on the eighteenth-century.

    • Expand scholarship and research to less endowed institutions and independent researchers, with continued access to eighteenth-century content outside of academia.

“As the leading provider of digital humanities learning tools and primary sources to support research, Gale is committed to promoting scholarship on the eighteenth-century,” said Roger Strong, vice president of sales for academic libraries at Gale. “This partnership with ASECS enable us to more closely align resources like ECCO to course integration and digital humanities pedagogy, including joint efforts around the sharing of research outcomes, and the continued development of primary source tools and platforms to support the future needs of ASECS and other learned societies.”

ASECS north American members can access ECCO at: https://www.asecs.org/ecco.

Cornell University is Now Live on the FOLIO Library Services Platform with EBSCO FOLIO
~ Open Source Library Services Community Member Implements FOLIO ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — July 28, 2021 — Cornell University Library, a founding member of the FOLIO project, has become the largest research institution to adopt the FOLIO Library Services Platform (LSP) with hosting and service support from EBSCO Information Services’ EBSCO FOLIO. EBSCO supported the migration from Cornell’s existing integrated library system (ILS) and will continue to provide hosting and service support to Cornell University Library.

Cornell co-developed and implemented FOLIO as an open source, flexible, collaborative and sustainable solution to support multiple library operations. By choosing to run FOLIO through a hosting and service provider, libraries such as Cornell are making the decision to outsource LSP support, avoiding the need to develop that capacity in-house. EBSCO is among the service providers that are part of the project and are now offering hosting and support services, providing more choice for libraries.

Debra Howell, Director of Information Technology Operations at Cornell University Library, says that being heavily involved in the FOLIO community gave Cornell a stake in the open source project. “Moving to FOLIO gives us the opportunity to leverage the hard work of our staff members who have helped build the FOLIO platform. By taking advantage of EBSCO’s implementation and hosting services we can easily integrate our library services and leverage EBSCO’s role in developing FOLIO.”

Cornell recently transitioned to EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS) and will be integrating FOLIO with the EBSCO Knowledge Base, as well as GOBI® Library Solutions from EBSCO. By moving to EDS and EBSCO Knowledge Services, Cornell will be able to leverage APIs that work with third-party systems already in place. Using the EBSCO Knowledge Base will ensure that data remains optimized, while providing a better user experience.

ByWater Solutions, America’s forefront provider of Open Source library technology support, announced today that the Koha Open Source ILS now has integration with INN-Reach, a resource-sharing tool from Innovative Interfaces, Inc. ByWater Solutions partnered with Theke Solutions and Innovative Interfaces, Inc. to develop the integration between the two platforms.

Nate Curulla, CRO, recently commented on the integration, "ByWater Solutions and Theke Solutions are thrilled to have developed the first open-source integration with INN-Reach and look forward to the new connections our library partners can make with their community now that the functionality is available."

The INN-Reach Plugin adds functionality that integrates the central INN-Reach server to Koha. When patrons make requests from that INN-Reach server, data pushes directly into Koha easily allowing staff to manage borrowing and lending. These requests create bibliographic records, item records, and holds automatically without staff intervention.

Tomás Cohen Arazi, Developer and Owner of Theke Solutions, recently commented on the development, "When developing the integration for INN-Reach and Koha, we tried to make it seamless and familiar to use for Koha users. We wrapped it into a plugin that implements both an ILL-backend for Koha, and also tons of API routes that are required to integrate all the ILL workflows that INN-Reach supports."

Jon Driscoll, Library Systems Specialist at Tutt Library, Colorado College recently commented on the project and work with the ByWater Solutions' team, "Days like this are why I love working with Andrew, Tomas, and Bywater in general. I'm usually impressed with the support we get but the responsiveness during this project has been phenomenal. I keep getting to amaze people when something they report is fixed within a day or two. You continue to validate our decision to migrate and work with Bywater and exceed my expectations daily. Thank you!"
