The Guards Magazine, the official journal of the Household Division, has digitised its complete 150-year history with the help of the British Library and in collaboration with Exact Editions. The new archive boasts a comprehensive search function and cross-platform accessibility, allowing users to browse through centuries of military history, including two world wars, at the touch of a button.

The majority of the magazine’s content is created by serving or former regimental members of the Household Division. Published three times a year, each issue of The Guard’s Magazine comprises 120 pages of regimental news, feature articles on both contemporary and historical subjects, images, obituaries, reviews, competitions and more. Transcending its military subject matter in terms of its academic value, the archive also serves as an invaluable record for social, economic, royal and constitutional historians.

Peter Joosse, Alasdair Watson, Bruce Inksetter, and Franak Hilloowala. The work provides the first complete and annotated translation along with a new edition of the Arabic text showing the stages in which the author composed the work. Introductory essays provide important background.

Featured on Brill’s new and bespoke platform for text editions, Brill Scholarly Editions, LHOM offers a full-text searchable, complete, annotated translation along with a new edition of the celebrated, informative and entertaining history of medicine – the first of its kind – by Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʿah (d. 1270), together with several introductory essays. The work is the earliest comprehensive history of medicine containing biographies of over 432 physicians, ranging from the ancient Greeks to the author’s contemporaries, describing their training and practice, often as court physicians, and listing their medical works; all this interlaced with poems and anecdotes.

EBSCO Information Services Announces Submissions Open for the 2020 EBSCO Solar Grant
~ Three $100,000 Grants Available for Libraries Looking to Go Green ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — January 24, 2020 — EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) is soliciting grant applications to give libraries the opportunity to “go green” by funding solar installations through the 2020 EBSCO Solar grant program. As part of the EBSCO Solar initiative, EBSCO will be making three $100,000 grants available to applicants from libraries around the world.

The grants will allow winning libraries to reduce their utilities expenses by installing a solar array at their institution. After seeing the benefits on its own campus, EBSCO introduced the EBSCO Solar grant program so libraries interested in adding their own solar arrays can do so. Since 2016, EBSCO Solar has given libraries nearly a million dollars in grant money.

In 2019, EBSCO received submissions from 18 countries. Medicine Hat College in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada; New Port Richey Public Library, New Port Richey, Florida; and Hedgesville Public Library, Hedgesville, West Virginia were each awarded $100,000 last year. These libraries are expected to install their arrays in 2020.

EBSCO Information Services President Tim Collins says institutions benefit from reducing their carbon footprint in ways beyond saving money. “EBSCO prides itself on being an example of how sustainable resources can be developed at a corporate level. We are excited to promote this initiative and offer solar grants to libraries so we can invest in communities looking to offer alternative energy resources. Submissions are due by May 1st, and the winner will be announced on June 26th, 2020, both online and at the ALA-Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois. Submissions for the 2020 John Cotton Dana Award Are Now Open
~ Eight Winners to Receive $10,000 in Development Awards ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — January 24, 2020 — The American Library Association (ALA) is now accepting submissions for the 2020 John Cotton Dana Award (JCD). The John Cotton Dana Award is one of the most prestigious awards given to libraries and honors outstanding library public relations. Eight $10,000 awards will be provided by the H.W. Wilson Foundation in 2020.

The awards are managed by the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) division of ALA, and judges are associated with this division. The 2020 John Cotton Dana Awards will be presented to winners at the 2020 ALA Annual awards ceremony sponsored by ALA and EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO).

Libraries of all types and sizes are encouraged to submit entries for a 2020 John Cotton Dana Award. Entries should highlight a strategic communications campaign from the past year. Examples of past campaigns have included rebranding efforts, promotion of archives and special collections, awareness campaigns, community partnerships and special events. Entries may be submitted by any library, Friends group, consulting agency or service provider, unless they are represented on the JCD committee.

Entries for the JCD Award are organized around needs assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Entrants are asked to submit documentation to show the scope and effectiveness of their campaign. Examples of these documents may include initial assessments and research, processes for implementation, goals met, creative output, media releases, media coverage and other metrics that establish results.
