    About Judson College
Since 1838, Judson College has been committed to preparing young women for lives of purpose through the transmission of knowledge, the refinement of intellect, the nurturing of faith, the promotion of service, and the development of character. A private, four-year, Christian college with degree programs in liberal arts and the sciences, Judson College helps each student reach her full potential by providing her with opportunities to engage her mind, practice her faith, and live her purpose.

Over the past twenty years, 96% of Judson women have been employed or have entered graduate school within a year of graduation.  Through academic and co-curricular experiences, Judson helps each student find her voice while she earns the credentials that will help her voice be heard.  As the only women’s college in Alabama and the most affordable women’s college in the nation, Judson is committed to being a place devoted to young women.  We believe that this environment helps our students develop the knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills they need to achieve their goals in a more profound way than they could in a coeducational setting.

After 178 years, Judson College remains loyal to its original mission of educating young women in preparation for a life of service.  We are a community that finds ongoing meaning in our shared traditions of the past, work in the present, and hopes for the future as we seek to recognize and embody God’s light and truth in the world. Leiden / Boston / Paderborn / Singapore – 24 February 2017

In a unique partnership, Brill released an online collection of over 45,000 documents from the archives of Casa de las Américas in Cuba. Containing newspaper clippings, cable messages, interviews, conference memorabilia, etc., the collection covers almost sixty years of cultural relations between Revolutionary Cuba and abroad. Casa de las Américas was founded only three months after the Cuban Revolution by Haydee Santamaría, a female guerilla who fought alongside Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in the 26th of July Movement, which overthrew President Batista on 1 January 1959. After Cuba became increasingly isolated, Casa de las Américas soon became a fundamental link between the cultural vanguard in Latin America and the Caribbean on the one hand and Cuba on the other. Over the years, the institute has been a host to thousands of writers and artists from throughout the region and has organized countless cultural events. The vast amount of documents created and collected since its foundation sheds a light on a vibrant cultural history, which is now accessible online for the first time.

Arjan van Dijk, Senior Editor at Brill, comments: “We are thrilled to be the first international publisher to collaborate with a Cuban institution on such a large project. Casa de las Américas is one of the most important cultural hubs in its hemisphere and its archive is an indispensable source for understanding Cuban culture and its development from the early 1960s until today.”

In the coming years Brill and Casa de las Américas plan to collaborate on making more of the vast archive of the Casa available online.

Facet Publishing have announced the release of the second edition of The Special Collections Handbook

This new edition from Alison Cullingford, Special Collections Librarian at the University of Bradford, is a practical day-to-day companion covering all aspects of special collections work.

Working with special collections can vary dramatically from preserving a single rare book to managing and digitizing vast mixed-media archives, yet the role of the information professional is always critical in tapping into the potential of these collections, protecting their legacy and bringing them to the attention of the wider public. This book offers up-to-date guidance which pulls together insights from best practice across the heritage sector to build innovative, co-operative and questioning mind-sets that will help them to cope in turbulent times.

Alison said “despite the challenges, the five years since the first edition have seen new reports, new collaborations , new publications and new standards; great progress has been made on digital curation, on tackling hidden collections, on doing what we do – better.”

Highlights of the new edition include coverage of new standards and concepts including unique and distinctive collections (UDCs); discussion of the major changes to laws affecting special collections; exploration of new trends in research including the rise of digital humanities, open access, the impact agenda and the REF; and consideration of impact and indicators, digitization and new skills frameworks from CILIP Rare Books and Special Collections Group and ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section.

Alison Cullingford is Special Collections Librarian at the University of Bradford, where she is responsible for over 100 collections of modern archives and rare books. The service was the first English university to achieve Archive Accreditation. She also managed the Unique and Distinctive Collections project for Research Libraries UK. An active member of the CILIP Rare Books and Special Collections Group and many other sector groups, Alison also regularly presents at conferences, blogs and tweets on the importance of the special collections librarian.
