    Leiden / Boston / Paderborn / Singapore – 24 February 2017

In a unique partnership, Brill released an online collection of over 45,000 documents from the archives of Casa de las Américas in Cuba. Containing newspaper clippings, cable messages, interviews, conference memorabilia, etc., the collection covers almost sixty years of cultural relations between Revolutionary Cuba and abroad. Casa de las Américas was founded only three months after the Cuban Revolution by Haydee Santamaría, a female guerilla who fought alongside Fidel Castro and Che Guevara in the 26th of July Movement, which overthrew President Batista on 1 January 1959. After Cuba became increasingly isolated, Casa de las Américas soon became a fundamental link between the cultural vanguard in Latin America and the Caribbean on the one hand and Cuba on the other. Over the years, the institute has been a host to thousands of writers and artists from throughout the region and has organized countless cultural events. The vast amount of documents created and collected since its foundation sheds a light on a vibrant cultural history, which is now accessible online for the first time.

Arjan van Dijk, Senior Editor at Brill, comments: “We are thrilled to be the first international publisher to collaborate with a Cuban institution on such a large project. Casa de las Américas is one of the most important cultural hubs in its hemisphere and its archive is an indispensable source for understanding Cuban culture and its development from the early 1960s until today.”

In the coming years Brill and Casa de las Américas plan to collaborate on making more of the vast archive of the Casa available online.
