Huntsville Public Library Goes Live on ByWater Solutions Koha Support

ByWater Solutions, an open source community contributor and America's forefront provider of Koha support, announced today that the Huntsville Public Library of Huntsville, Ontario is now live on their Koha open source integrated library system.

ByWater Solutions has completed the migration of the Libraries' more than 56,000 titles earlier this year and is providing ongoing hosting and support services to the library. The Huntsville Public Library's customized online catalog can be viewed at: http://huntsville-ca.bywatersolutions.com/

Deborah Duce, CEO and Chief Librarian, commented on their decision to move to Koha with ByWater:

"2015 was an amazing year for Huntsville Public Library. We started the year off with a migration to ByWater Solutions and with the support of the knowledgeable and innovative team at ByWater Solutions we have jumped 'outside the box' with sustainable, efficient and effective procedures that allow staff to provide quality services to users at our physical and virtual (huntsvilleibrary.ca) libraries."

    About the Huntsville Public Library:
Huntsville Public Library is committed to providing quality services, relevant programs, up-to-date collections, and secure library facilities for individuals and groups in the community. The Huntsville Public Library began as a Mechanics' Institute in 1880. Mechanics' Institutes were established in Great Britain in the early 19th century to provide education for working men through study classes, lectures and library facilities. By the late 19th century the Mechanics' Institutes served principally as libraries, as was the case in Huntsville, supported by membership fees and, usually, small municipal and/or government grants. The first known librarian in Huntsville was William Randalson who served from at least 1893 until 1918.

February 1991 saw the official launch of the new automated library system replacing the card catalogue and print circulation system. Throughout the 1990's and 2000's, the library has continued to update automated systems. Patrons are able to access the internet on a regular basis including wireless service. On May 1st 2010, the Huntsville Public Library celebrated 130 years of service to the community. For more information please visit: http://www.huntsvillelibrary.ca/en/index.asp

    About Koha:

Koha is distributed under the open-source General Public License (GPL). For more information about Koha, please visit: http://koha-community.org/

    About ByWater Solutions:

North Bethesda, MD, April 29, 2016 - LibLime, a division of PTFS, announces that the El Dorado Correctional Facility has contracted with LibLime to provide implementation, support and hosting services for LibLime Academic Koha. Ellsworth will take advantage of much of the functionality offered in the application, including:

    • Single screen cataloging editor with MARC21 validation and the option to embed local cataloging guidelines; with support for MARC Authority records, MARC Bibliographic records, and MARC Holdings records.
    • New reports module with asynchronous retrieval.
    • Discovery Layer offering a cloud-based, fast and locally customized index of a library’s information assets, with an easy-to-use and powerful way of accessing all of that information from a single search box.

    About El Dorado Correctional Facility
The El Dorado Correctional Facility (EDCF) was established in 1991. It was built in response to a federal mandate to ease over-crowding at the state's other two maximum security prisons. Expansion in 2001 brought two new general population cellhouses. The facility is expected to expand in the future. EDCF is a maximum security prison located in Prospect Township in Butler County, Kansas east of the town of El Dorado. EDCF is home of the Kansas Department of Corrections Reception and Diagnostic Unit, or RDU, which processes every male inmate when they are received into KDOC custody. RDU helps determine the inmate's custody level, mental health classification, and educational program needs before he is sent to another facility.

    About LibLime - PTFS

    Reactions
Professor Mohammed Ghaly, the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Islamic Ethics: “Journal of Islamic Ethics (JIE) is to be an international podium for high-quality academic research in the field of Islamic Ethics. JIE will be open for academic researchers coming from different disciplines with a keen interest in making seminal contributions to this field. Building upon the reputation of Brill, CILE aspires to concretize its vision by putting Islamic Ethics at the heart of modern scholarship and reaching out to academics worldwide.”

Mr. Pabbruwe, the CEO of Brill: “We are very happy with this new partnership. It reflects both current Open Access developments and the role of Qatar as an academic center of excellence in the region.”

“This collaboration is a perfect fit with Brill’s publishing strategy to continue to develop new journals and other publications in emerging scholarly fields within Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies”, says Maurits van den Boogert, the senior acquisitions editor responsible for the new journal at Brill. “The Journal of Islamic Ethics will be a valuable addition to Brill’s existing publications on law and theology in the modern Islamic world.”

    For immediate release:

    Critical Literacy for Information Professionals

This new book explores critical literacy theory and provides practical guidance to how it can be taught and applied in libraries.

The approach taken in critical literacy is not to read texts in isolation, but to develop an understanding of the cultural, ideological and sociolinguistic contexts in which they are created and read.

The book introduces critical literacy concepts in ways that are accessible to readers who are new to the subject while also appealing to those with greater knowledge by exploring critical literacy from a range of theoretical perspectives and linking these ideas to current debates in information studies.

Critical Literacy for Information Professionals also contains a series of practically-focussed case studies that describe tools or approaches that librarians have used to engage users in critical literacy. Drawing on examples from across library sectors including schools, public libraries, universities, workplaces and healthcare, these illustrate how critical literacy can be applied across a variety of library settings, including online and new media environments.

The book will be essential reading for librarians, information professionals and managers in all sectors, students of library and information science, school and higher education teachers and researchers.
