    Leiden (NL), 11 July 2017

KONINKLIJKE BRILL N.V., the international scholarly publisher, has acquired all shares of SENSE PUBLISHERS B.V. (Dordrecht, NL) effective 1 July 2017 upon completion of satisfactory due diligence.

Earlier today, Brill and Sense Publishers signed an agreement to transfer all shares of Sense Publishers to Brill. With this agreement, Brill acquires an international English language publication list in Educational Research and related fields. In total the list includes over 1400 book titles, with 160 new books added each year. The annual revenues amount to approx.
    1 million Euros.

“Sense Publishers have succeeded in building a strong and important book program in international Educational Research.”, says Herman Pabbruwe, Brill’s CEO. “We are proud to become the successors of this prominent list, which we aim to expand into a full-fledged scholarly publication program in various formats. The entire book list will become available on our own online platform later this year, to be joined by other important scholarly works in this growing field of knowledge. It is an important step in our strategy to further expand into the field of social sciences.”

Peter de Liefde, owner and managing director of Sense, adds: “We were looking for a suitable candidate to continue the program and we are extremely grateful to have reached an agreement with Brill. Brill is not only an important global player in the humanities and social sciences, but they are also well positioned to expand our book program and serve our authors with other research outlets like journals and reference works.”

All current editorial staff of Sense will move to Brill. To ensure the continuity of the program with editors, authors and customers, Mr. De Liefde has agreed to support Brill in a consultancy role for the next two years.

The acquisition is effective per 1 July 2017 and is expected to contribute to this year’s earnings per share.

For more information on this media alert, please contact Sam Bruinsma, Senior Vice President Business Development Brill (bruinsma@brill.com). For more information on sales and distribution, please contact sales@brill.com, or for the Americas, cs@brillusa.com.

Facet Publishing have announced the release of the 5th edition of Phil Bradley’s Expert Internet Searching.

In the fifth edition of Expert Internet Searching, author Phil Bradley targets the recent phenomena of fake news. Bradley explains why it occurs, how it can be identified and how information professionals can lead the charge in combating it.

First published in 1999 (as The Advanced Internet Searcher’s Handbook), Expert Internet Searching covers the basics of search before going into detail on how to run advanced and complex searches using a variety of different search engines. The new edition references over 300 search engines and associated search tools and has been updated to include current trends including social media search, visual search, and discussion of the authority and validity of search results.

Bradley said, “We all still see the rather silly claim that ‘it’s all on Google, so why do we need libraries and librarians?’ but I firmly believe that information professionals are needed now more than ever. It’s part of our role to help stem the tide of fake news, to open people’s eyes to the rich abundance of information available in so many different formats, and to assist them in working out what they need to know and the best way of getting it. When I was a child and I told my careers officer that I wanted to be a librarian she said ‘is it because you like books?’ and I said ‘No, it’s because I want the power’.
