Farmington Hills, Mich., March 12, 2012 — Gale, part of Cengage Learning and a leading publisher of research and reference resources for libraries, schools and businesses, today announced DemographicsNow: Business & People, an online business and residential reference tool that provides detailed demographic data on more than 23 million businesses and 206 million consumers. Designed with an intuitive interface, interactive mapping tools and comprehensive data, this new resource makes it easy for all types of researchers to collect, analyze and act upon information, all from one location.

“Libraries today don’t have the budget to subscribe to multiple resources to get all of the demographic information their patrons need,” said Gerald Sawchuk, publisher, public library solutions at Gale. “DemographicsNow: Business & People combines information and tools normally found in two or more online databases in one convenient location, offering a cost-effective alternative to current products on the market.”

DemographicsNow: Business & People not only offers demographic information on any U.S. geography, including information on income, housing, race, age, education, retail spending and more, but it also allows users to compare multiple geographies and drill down to data on a specific county, zip code, congressional district and more. A unique mapping tool within the resource also allows users to map their results, create custom geographies and view demographic variables in thematic coloring scales. The Business tab includes data on 23 million businesses (with over 4 million classified as out-of-business since the year 2000) with the ability to search by company name, business type, number of employees and other limiters, while the Households tab contains data on more than 206 million U.S. residents (approximately 135 million households) and enables users to search by name, address or a variety of U.S. Census data averages. Once the necessary data is collected, users can export the information into word, pdf or excel reports for further analysis and application.

DemographicsNow: Business & People will serve a variety of needs and will be used by all types of users – from small business owners, entrepreneurs and sales people, to jobseekers, students, community leaders and non-profit organizations. Entrepreneurs can use it to create a business plan or to do a location analysis; small business owners can rely on it to identify competitors in their area or help relocate their business; marketing and sales people can develop targeted, accurate customer leads and mailing lists for campaigns; students can research companies and regions for assignments; and jobseekers can find information on a company before a job interview.

For more information on DemographicsNow: Business & People or to request a trial, please visit www.gale.cengage.com/demographicsnow or visit the Gale booth (#1804) at the Public Library Association Meeting in Philadelphia March 14-16. ~ Expanded Agreement Enables Two Additional Historical Databases to be Discoverable in EBSCO Discovery Service™ ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — March 9, 2012 — EBSCO Publishing has expanded its partnership with Accessible Archives, Inc. to include American County Histories to 1900: New England and The Civil War: Parts V and IV in EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS). The agreement allows metadata from these two resources to be added to the Base Index of EDS.

American County Histories to 1900: New England presents all the publications from New England counties revealing detailed information about history, geology, geography, government, family history and many other subject areas related to the New England area. Additional county histories will be added throughout the year. The Civil War: Parts V and IV presents various aspects of the Civil War from an Iowa and Midwestern perspective.

Accessible Archives, Inc. is an electronic publisher of primary source full-text historical databases encompassing rich, comprehensive material found in leading historical periodicals, books and newspapers. Accessible Archives content also provides unique historical elements reflecting broad views of American history and culture. Information includes: eyewitness accounts of historical events, vivid descriptions of daily life, editorial observations, commerce as seen through advertisements and genealogical records.

EBSCO Discovery Service users will have the ability to search the full text of Accessible Archives resources bringing an extended list of results alongside additional library resources. EDS creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box—searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

EBSCO platform statistics (EBSCOhost® and EBSCO Discovery Service) are available on demand (ad-hoc access) to the library allowing reports to be generated at any time. EBSCO’s statistical reports conform to NISO Standardized Usage Harvest Initiative (SUSHI). EBSCO has been actively involved in the development of current standards in the library/serials industry, including SUSHI.

Accessible Archives Inc. is part of a growing list of publishers and other content partners that are taking part in EDS to bring more visibility to their content. Partners include the world’s largest scholarly journal & book publishers including Elsevier, Wiley Blackwell, Springer Science & Business Media, Taylor & Francis Informa, Sage Publications, and thousands of others. Partners also include content providers, such as LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), JSTOR, ARTstor, Credo Reference, World Book, ABC-CLIO, and many others.

The EDS Base Index represents content from approximately 20,000 providers (and growing) in addition to metadata from another 70,000 book publishers, representing far more content providers and publishers than any other discovery service.

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box—searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

EBSCO Discovery Service is quickly becoming the discovery selection for many libraries (www.ebscohost.com/discovery/eds-news), and an obvious partner for content providers. Because the service builds on the foundation provided by the EBSCOhost® platform, libraries gain a full user experience for discovering their collections/OPAC—which is not typical in the discovery space. Further still, in the many universities and other libraries where EBSCOhost is the most-used platform for premium research, users are not asked to change their pathways or habits for searching. There’s simply more to discover on the familiar EBSCOhost platform, and the same can be said for library administrators who can leverage their previous work with EBSCOadmin™.

    About Accessible Archives, Inc.

Founded in 1990, Accessible Archives utilizes computer technology and a large team of conversion specialists to provide vast quantities of archived historical information previously available only in microformat or hard copy form or as images only. Diverse primary source materials reflecting broad views across American history and culture have been assembled into comprehensive databases. Developed by dedicated instructors and students of Americana, these databases allow access to the rich store of materials from leading books, newspapers and periodicals then current. Accessible Archives will continue to add titles covering important topics and time periods to assist scholars and students at all academic levels. Unlimited Priorities LLC is the exclusive sales & marketing agent for Accessible Archives and also facilitated the negotiations for this agreement.

North Bethesda, MD. February 28, 2012. LibLime, a Division of PTFS and WALDO (Westchester Academic Library Directors Organization), announce that the Connecticut Historical Society has successfully migrated to LibLime Academic Koha.
The Connecticut Historical Society worked with LibLime’s project management staff on data migration, system configuration, and training.

Barbara Austen, Florence S. Marcy Crofut Archivist remarked, “We are totally enjoying the LibLime Academic Koha system. I love being able to make changes to records so easily and adding items to holdings is a breeze compared to our procedure before. The staff members seem to like the new system, too--I did a demonstration for them, showing them how they could create lists when they had a research project to do. It is also more customizable--we keep changing the ‘new books’ featured on the opening page, and the illustration in the upper left can be easily changed as well.”

Barbara is very impressed with the depth of functionality and new development frequently added to LibLime Academic Koha. She explained “My only regret is that I simply do not have the time to totally familiarize myself with the various parts of the system, and to play with XSLT in the sandbox. “

Barbara also noted that Maria Laude, LibLime Customer Liaison Librarian, is a “terrific trainer”.

Now that Connecticut Historical Society is live on LibLime Academic Koha, they will enjoy the benefits of LibLime’s support and hosting in a distributed computing cloud platform.
