Popular features from the original interface, such as AutoIQ, Care & Repair Tips and Troubleshooting, are retained in the new Auto Repair Reference Center interface.

Auto Repair Reference Center is part of EBSCO’s collection of do-it-yourself resources. Other databases in this collection include: Small Engine Repair Reference Center™, providing reliable information for small engine repair assistance, Home Improvement Reference Center™, the definitive resource for home improvement and repair and Hobbies & Crafts Reference Center™, offering detailed "how-to" instructions and creative ideas to meet the interests of virtually every hobby-enthusiast.

~ Easy-to-Use Online Tool is Designed to Meet Libraries’ Online and Promotional Needs and Award Will Celebrate Communities that are LibraryAware ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — March 15, 2012 — EBSCO Publishing and the creators of the readers’ advisory service, NoveList® introduce LibraryAware™, a product that will revolutionize the way libraries promote their programs and services. LibraryAware will be available during 2012. In addition, NoveList is also celebrating communities that are “LibraryAware” with the LibraryAware Community Award, co-sponsored by industry trade magazine, Library Journal.

LibraryAware is an easy-to-use online tool designed to maximize the library’s resources and services. The innovative resource will help libraries create professional-looking promotional materials and then deliver those materials via print, email, social media and online communication channels.

With LibraryAware, librarians can combine professionally-designed templates with their own pieces of “reusable content” to carry information across an entire suite of promotional materials that can then easily be delivered to customers, community partners, elected officials and the media. LibraryAware improves what libraries are already doing with their promotional efforts by providing continually updated designs and best practice recommendations.

    LibraryAware Community Award
Continuing its efforts to help libraries thrive in their communities, NoveList has established the LibraryAware Community Award in partnership with Library Journal. The award has been created to celebrate communities aware of the benefits provided by the library and shows support of the library as an essential part of the community.

Vice President of NoveList, Duncan Smith says this award is truly different from any other award in the library community. “The uniqueness of this award stems from its focus on what the community says about the library rather than what the library says to the community.”

Ian Singer, VP, Group Publisher, Library Journal, School Library Journal, and The Horn Book says “We are very pleased to partner with NoveList on this important award program. At Library Journal, we understand how vital strong marketing campaigns and community outreach efforts are to the health of a library. When a community is aware of its library’s programming and offerings, the library becomes a more relied upon and integrated resource, which in turn places the library in a much stronger position to thrive, grow, and expand critical services. Supporting libraries with these efforts is a key mission of Library Journal and this is why we are excited about sponsoring this unique award with NoveList.”

First place will be $10,000, second place $7,500 and third place $5,000. More details about the award and application process will be available at ALA Annual 2012. The first awards will be presented during 2013.

Organized Approach Helps Patrons Discover and use Relevant Library Resources

Farmington Hills, Mich., March 14, 2012 — Gale, part of Cengage Learning and a leading publisher of research and reference resources for libraries, schools and businesses, today announced Gale Gateways, an innovative program for public libraries. Designed to represent the unique way in which a community interacts with its public library, Gale Gateways bring together thematic products and services to provide an organized approach to help patrons find and use information. Unlike anything else on the market, Gale Gateways will help libraries demonstrate their value and worth to their community.

“With Gale Gateways we wanted to recreate a patron’s in-library browsing experience ‘virtually,’ while also helping library staff better serve their patrons,” said Nader Qaimari, senior vice president, marketing, Cengage Learning. “Gale Gateways does this by bringing library users to an environment where resources can easily be discovered, providing relevance, meaning and transformative power. With Gateways, customers not only receive special pricing on a thematic grouping of online resources and eReference, but also value-add services including Gateway web, marketing and training/programming support.”

Web support includes the customizable Gateway web portal tool and search engine optimization. The Gateway portals can be linked from the library’s main website, are easy to configure and can link directly to any library resource – whether it be a Gale resource or not. Customization is a key feature of the portal tool, from content to logos, colors and text, librarians have full control of the Gateway look, as they are the ones that serve the community and know them best. Customers can give their Gateways any name, allowing them to tap into their current library branding if they choose, along with localizing their site with relevant community information.

Customized marketing materials, along with a new type of training/programming from Gale’s Customer Education Specialists, will extend the Gateway brand deep within a library community. Library staff training, direct to the public training, as well as templates and tools, will help staff create their own relevant community workshops around Gateway themes.

The themes of the first Gateways to be released include Business; Jobs & Career; Health & Wellness; Homework Help; and Home, Hobbies & Entertainment. Gale is working closely with customers to further explore all the possibilities within these first Gateways, as well as other themes to come. Feedback from current customers has been positive.

“We purchased the Homework Help Gateway from Gale as it will be of invaluable assistance to our younger patrons as they complete assignments, do homework and research projects,” said Peggy Murphy, Interim Collection Services Manager at Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL). “LAPL is committed to providing as much help as possible to the students in our communities. The Homework Help Gateway optimizes all our resources with the goal of helping students succeed.”

~ Warsaw University Becomes First in Poland to Implement a Discovery Service ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — March 13, 2012 — Warsaw University, the largest university in Poland, has chosen EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS) from EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) and fully implemented the service as of October 2011. Warsaw University was declared number one in the ranking published by the national daily Rzeczpospolita and the education monthly Perspektywy. The innovation and uniqueness of EBSCO Discovery Service will help the university continue to be recognized as a leading academic centre in its part of Europe.

When looking for a discovery service, Warsaw University’s goal was to integrate its e-resources to give users the ability to browse them within one search. Zuza Wiorogórska, Senior Librarian at Warsaw University Library, says choosing a discovery service was a lengthy process that included various tests and a survey. “In the last phase of testing, before the decision on purchase, we did a survey among all our users (i.e. students and faculties). The feedback helped make our decision.”

The overwhelming majority of respondents chose EDS as the integrated search tool of choice. Key factors for choosing EDS included the speed of searching, the usefulness of limiters and facets for consolidating user refinement actions and the overall search experience including the way it enabled unexpected and important discoveries.

Wiorogórska says that the implementation of EDS will not only provide a simplified and fast search experience for library users but it will bring great recognition to the university. “We are the first university in Poland that implemented EDS and the first that implemented this kind of service in general. We think it will further enhance our reputation.”

The flexibility of EBSCO Discovery Service, including the ability to customize the search screen to was also a factor in their decision to go with EDS. The university was also able to customize the name calling it “Multiwyszukiwarka EDS.”

Warsaw University expects to see usage statistics continue to go up and expects the EDS base index to continue to expand.

The Base Index for EBSCO Discovery Service forms the foundation upon which each EDS subscribing library builds out its custom collection. Beginning with the Base Index, each institution extends the reach of EDS by adding appropriate resources including its catalog, institutional repositories, EBSCOhost and other databases, and additional content sources to which it subscribes. It is this combination that allows a single, comprehensive, custom solution for discovering the value of any library’s collection.

The EDS Base Index is comprised of metadata from the world’s foremost information providers. At present, the EDS Base Index represents content from approximately 20,000 providers in addition to metadata from another 70,000 book publishers. Although constantly growing, today the EDS Base Index provides metadata for nearly 64,000 magazines & journals, approximately 825,000 CDs & DVDs, nearly six million books, more than 320 million newspaper articles, more than 400,000 conference proceedings and hundreds of thousands of additional information sources from various source-types.
