The award ceremony took place on Wednesday 10 April 2018. The award was accepted by Brill’s Sales Director for EMEA and South Asia, Linda Empringham.

The awards are organized annually since 2014, in partnership with the UK Publishers Association (PA), and celebrate excellence in seventeen categories, including international publishing, bookselling, academic and scholarly publishing, children’s publishing, literary translation and digital innovation. In each award category, the judging panel consists of experts in that sector.

FOLIO Library Services Platform to Benefit from Services Agreement Between EBSCO Information Services and Infoestratégica Latina
~ Agreement with Latin America’s Largest Open Source Service Provider Designed to Offer Libraries Choice and Support for FOLIO Systems ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — April 12, 2018 — A new relationship between EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and Infoestratégica Latina is designed to ensure that libraries adopting the FOLIO Library Services Platform (LSP) will be able to rely on hosting and services support. The agreement secures Infoestrategica’s pledge to provide FOLIO application and support services backed by EBSCO hosting technology and data services.

Infoestratégica Latina, located in Mexico City and Bogota, is one of the biggest general library service vendors in Latin America. Infoestratégica Latina CEO, José Luis Ascárraga Rossete, says that Infoestratégica Latina will work closely with EBSCO to provide support for their Latin American libraries using FOLIO as their library services platform. “The addition of open source services is important for libraries looking to save money and leverage the latest technology via the FOLIO Library Services Platform to provide more than traditional ILS functionality. Working with EBSCO to implement FOLIO in libraries will create a focus on service and customer support.”

EBSCO has supported FOLIO with funding, developers and project management as well as provided funding for Koha open source development. EBSCO will be providing hosting services and advanced software support as well as a complement of data integration services for libraries adopting the FOLIO LSP.

EBSCO Vice President of Services Product Management Ron Burns says these agreements give EBSCO the opportunity to create a high level of customer service standards. “It’s important that service providers like EBSCO and Infoestratégica Latina work together on local support structures for Latin America libraries looking to implement FOLIO. Many libraries need strong partners to take full advantage of modern open source benefits."

Infoestratégica Latina and EBSCO will be working together and with the FOLIO community to support the first libraries going live with FOLIO in 2019.

Since being announced in June 2016, FOLIO has formed a community and librarians and developers have joined special interest groups that are actively creating an open source LSP that supports traditional resource management functionality that can be extended into emerging areas. Google’s CASA removes barriers to accessing Gale’s scholarly research off-campus, from any device

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – April 10, 2018 – Gale, a Cengage company, has made it easier for academic researchers to access its scholarly content anytime, anywhere. Through a new partnership with Google Scholar, Gale has integrated Google’s Campus Activated Subscriber Access (CASA) into its Academic OneFile periodical database, ensuring users seamlessly experience uninterrupted access to its authoritative content, from any off-campus location or device.

CASA is an enhanced authentication service that builds upon Google Scholar's Subscriber Links service. Without CASA, Subscriber Links in Google Scholar search results are based on IP authentication. This is great for on-campus research, but falls short for remote access, becoming a frustrating experience for users. With CASA integration, remote researchers have the same Subscriber Links and unrestricted access to Gale content as on-campus researchers, from anywhere in the world.

Anurag Acharya, co-creator of Google Scholar said: "CASA builds on Google Scholar's Subscriber Links program which provides direct links in the search interface to subscribed collections for on-campus users. With CASA, a researcher can start a literature survey on-campus and resume where they left off once they are home or travelling, with no hoops to jump through. Their subscribed collections are highlighted in Google Scholar searches, enabling them to access articles in exactly the same way as on-campus researchers."

CASA is a free service and academic libraries that are included in Google Scholar Subscriber Links will automatically take advantage of the service when accessing Gale resources.

Open Dissertations Project from EBSCO Information Services Goes Live
~ OpenDissertations.org Already Has More Than One Million Electronic Theses and Dissertations Committed Just Months After Being Launched ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — April 9, 2018 — OpenDissertations.org, the project from EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and BiblioLabs, has gone live. More than 800,000 Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) are now available for public search and discovery, with more than one million expected by June.

EBSCO Open Dissertations™ is committed to providing open and free access to ETD metadata and content. In addition to the fully open website (www.opendissertations.org), EBSCO will include ETD metadata in EBSCO Discovery Service™ to facilitate access and improve content discovery for researchers. With more and more universities now hosting and distributing their own ETDs on the open web, EBSCO and BiblioLabs have created a service that freely aggregates and exposes this valuable content. EBSCO Open Dissertations extends access to any interested researchers worldwide and drives traffic to Institutional Repositories.

BiblioLabs CEO Mitchell Davis says the project is open to libraries around the world, and some of the first data made available for public search includes ETDs from across the U.K. that are included in the British Library’s EThOS Service. As UKSG 2018 approaches, he says there could be no better time to launch. “We are working to drive more discovery of U.K. ETDs through this project, and what better time to launch than ahead of this important U.K. Higher Ed. event. The British Library has been an amazing innovation partner working with us for years, and this project is an exciting way to extend our partnership.”

Davis says the response from libraries is letting BiblioLabs and EBSCO know they are on the right track. “We know from the number of libraries that have committed to join the project (especially the reactions we have seen in such a short time) that we have hit on a real need. We intend to build on our work with EBSCO and libraries in a way that supports the ETD community and this stream of research for the long term.”

More than 30 institutions from four continents are currently participating in the EBSCO Open Dissertations project. These institutions represent more than one million dissertations that will be searchable from www.opendissertations.org. Since the project was launched in November, more than 50 institutions have reached out to discuss the project and commit resources.

EBSCO Information Services’ Senior Vice President of Product Management Michael Laddin says the positive response to the project in such a short time shows that EBSCO Open Dissertations is meeting a real need to make ETD information more accessible. “We are committed to supporting more open source software models in the library industry. With OpenDissertations.org, we are creating new content discovery paradigms around which EBSCO and libraries can partner more closely, and we are working with BiblioLabs to unlock that potential.”

Opendissertations.org is the next step in an ongoing effort to open access to dissertations. In 2014, EBSCO and the H.W. Wilson Foundation created American Doctoral Dissertations, which contained indexing from the H.W. Wilson print publication, Doctoral Dissertations Accepted by American Universities, 1933-1955. In 2015, the H.W. Wilson Foundation agreed to support the expansion of the scope of the American Doctoral Dissertations database to include records for dissertations and theses from 1955 to the present with the goal of creating a single portal for ETDs which could be added to university profiles and accessed online.

Facet Publishing have announced the release of Heather Ryan and Walker Sampson’s The No-nonsense Guide to Born-digital Content.

Libraries and archives of all sizes are collecting and managing an increasing proportion of digital content. Within this body of digital content is a growing pool of ‘born-digital’ content: content that has been created and has often existed solely in digital form. The No-nonsense Guide to Born-digital Content explains step by step processes for developing and implementing born-digital content workflows in library and archive settings and includes a range of case studies collected from small, medium and large institutions internationally.

Authors Heather Ryan and Walker Sampson said, “Our book is for librarians and archivists who have found themselves managing or are planning to manage born-digital content and who may feel somewhat unsure of their ability to take on a task that by all appearances demands a high level of technological expertise”.
