Facet Publishing have announced the release of two new books, Practical Tips for Facilitating Research and Dynamic Research Support for Academic Libraries.

Higher education is in a period of rapid evolution and academic libraries must continually evaluate and adjust their services to meet new needs. Librarian roles are changing and new specialisms, such as data librarians are emerging. Activities are being driven by researcher requirements such as the demand for wider dissemination and the impact of research.

Two new books from Facet Publishing, Practical Tips for Facilitating Research and Dynamic Research Support for Academic Libraries, will provide inspiration and practical guidance to enable LIS staff developing their role in the research environment to evaluate their current provision and develop services to meet the evolving needs of the research community.

Practical Tips for Facilitating Research offers innovative tips and reliable best practice to assist academic liaison librarians, research support librarians and all library and information professionals who work with research staff and students.

Author Moira Bent said, “my book bridges the gap between theory and practice, grounding the very practical ideas garnered from library and information staff around the world in current research in the library and information science discipline.”

Dynamic Research Support for Academic Libraries provides inspiration through illustrative examples of emerging models of research support and is contributed to by library practitioners from across the world.
Editor Starr Hoffman said, “Dynamic Research Support for Academic Libraries is designed to inspire librarians and administrators to think of ‘research support’ not merely as Reference 2.0, but as an innovative, holistic activity that should be distributed throughout the organization.”

Both titles are available through Bookpoint.

IPSWICH, Mass. — March 14, 2016 — Two software-as-a-service components from EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) will play a significant role in the creation of a national sociology research portal in Germany. The portal’s search index will be built on EBSCO Discovery Service™, and researchers will use PlumX™ Dashboards to track the impact of their sociology research via real-time analytics.

The sociology portal is being created in cooperation with the German Association of Sociologists (DGS) and is one part of a multi-disciplinary research tool funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). DFG is sponsoring a nationwide initiative (Specialised Information Program, or FID) that encourages university libraries to build infrastructures for high-level research.

Out of the many subjects that will be covered in this initiative, the sociology portal is the first FID to use EDS and PlumX Dashboards, and it is expected that these services will provide a powerful search tool and valuable metrics by which to judge the value of the research.

IPSWICH, Mass. — March 8, 2016 — R&D teams and corporate librarians can now quickly determine the novelty of an idea or technology across the broadest set of content available with the introduction of Global Patents™ from EBSCO Information Services. The online resource opens up a wealth of patent information to researchers and operational professionals.

Updated monthly, Global Patents includes more than 77 million patent records — with over 29 million in full text — from more than 100 patent authorities around the world. R&D specialists can combine Global Patents with EBSCO’s vast collection of STM content to create comprehensive research landscapes and analyze the novelty of a given development opportunity.

Researchers access content via the EBSCOhost® or EBSCO Discovery Service™ platforms, or directly within their company’s intranet. Because the content is designed to be accessible for all user types, it provides a jumping-off point for all levels of researchers — especially those on R&D teams who may not have a great deal of experience with complex patent searching. Using Global Patents, R&D teams can access the information they need to assess the viability of new projects without having to enlist premium patent search services — saving the organization valuable time and money.

EBSCO Senior Director of Product Management Joe Tragert says Global Patents can play a key role in making patent searching accessible to organizations enterprise-wide. “In many companies, patent searching is not easily accessed or convenient for non-IP professionals due to technical or licensing restrictions. We have designed Global Patents to be accessible and usable by all people in the organization. Global Patents opens up a trove of valuable information to more people in more places.”
