North Bethesda, MD, February 14, 2014- LibLime, a division of PTFS, announces that Amy Begg De Groff will be taking on responsibilities as the LibLime Division Manager.

Ms. De Groff came to PTFS in 2010 as the Transition Management consultant charged with overseeing the LibLime acquisition. She came to PTFS from Howard County Library (HCL) where she was Director of Information Technology. As LibLime Division Manager, Ms. De Groff will oversee LibLime products & services, work with LibLime clients on ongoing feature development, and provide day to day management of the Division.

In accepting this position, Amy says “Accepting the offer to return to PTFS as a full time member of the LibLime Division was an easy decision. With the US Federal Government validating the LibLime approach to open development – as evidenced by two multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts, it is clear that LibLime is in an ideal position to truly deliver a state-of-the-art, scalable information retrieval system that has been, for some time now, merely an idea for many professionals. “ Amy points out, “2014 will certainly be a year of continued success for LibLime; my role will be to do all I can to help LibLime’s talented team to continue their superior work.”

Ms. De Groff has been a librarian for over 20 years. While with the Smithsonian Institution Libraries in the 1990’s, she was involved in early digitization and imaging projects. She moved to PTFS in 2000, where she gained valuable experience in federal procurement and federal service contracts; she worked on several multi -million dollar contracts, involving agencies such as the National Archives and Records Administration, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, and the National Library of Medicine. Ms. De Groff then joined Watson Wyatt Worldwide as Director of their Records Management Program, becoming responsible for the management of print and digital collections in 35 North American offices.

In 2005, De Groff moved to HCL, joining Brian Auger (currently ‎Director of the Somerset County Library System). As a team, they wanted to step beyond the world of proprietary software and take control of their technology trajectory by reimagining how libraries select and deploy technology solutions. The vision was that open development solutions offered libraries a way to reduce their IT spending and transfer that spending to areas where libraries should focus their energies – providing services – such as more materials, more programs, and more staff. One example of their success -- within five years HCL had doubled the number of public computers at the six branches, with no increase in cost by deploying Ubuntu rather than a proprietary desktop operating system.

EBSCO and NEWTON Media Collaborate to Add Media News Content from Central and Eastern Europe to EBSCO Discovery Service™
~ NEWTON Media is Largest Media News Archive in Czech Republic,
    Slovakia and Poland ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — February 13, 2014 — Metadata from NEWTON Media, a.s. the leading Media Monitoring provider in Central & Eastern Europe, will be searchable in EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS), a robust and comprehensive discovery service from EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO). NEWTON Media deliveres the largest media news archive in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland and spans many different media sources including news digests of print, radio, television, internet and agency news and monitor current events, advertising, and social networks.

Metadata from NEWTON Media’s collection offers more than 900 print sources including national and regional media, social and professional magazines, business bulletins and corporate newsletters. Content also includes a news archive of hundreds of internet servers, transcripts of almost 30 television and radio stations from the Czech Republic, Slovakia & Poland and e-clippings from print articles. Coverage dates back to 1996.

Newton Media is part of a growing list of publishers and other content partners that are taking part in EDS to bring more visibility to their content. Partners include the world’s largest scholarly journal & book publishers including Elsevier, Wiley Blackwell, Springer Science & Business Media, Taylor & Francis Informa, Sage Publications, Nature Publishing, IEEE, ACM and thousands of others. Partners also include content providers, such as LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), JSTOR, ARTstor, Credo Reference, Encyclopedia Britannica, World Book, ABC-CLIO, The Hathi Trust and many others.

EBSCO Discovery Service brings together the most comprehensive collection of content—including superior indexing from top subject indexes, high-end full text and the entire library collection—all within an unparalleled full-featured, customizable discovery layer experience.

EBSCO Discovery Service is quickly becoming the discovery selection for many libraries (www.ebscohost.com/discovery/eds-news), and an obvious partner for content providers. Because the service builds on the foundation provided by the EBSCOhost® platform, libraries gain a full user experience for discovering their collections/OPAC—which is not typical in the discovery space. Further still, in the many universities and other libraries where EBSCOhost is the most-used platform for premium research, users are not asked to change their pathways or habits for searching. There’s simply more to discover on the familiar EBSCOhost platform, and the same can be said for library administrators who can leverage their previous work with EBSCOadmin™.

    About EBSCO Information Services
EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) is the leading provider of resources for libraries including EBSCONET®, EBSCO’s total e-resource management system, and EBSCOhost®, the world's premier for-fee online research service, including full-text databases, subject indexes, point-of-care medical reference, historical digital archives and e-books. EBSCO provides more than 375 research databases and more than 500,000 e-books plus subscription management services for more than 360,000 unique titles including more than 57,000 online titles. Through a library of tens of thousands of full-text journals and magazines from renowned publishers, EBSCO serves the content needs of all researchers (Academic, Medical, K-12, Public Library, Corporate, Government, etc.). EBSCO is also the provider of EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS), which provides each institution with a fast, single search box for its entire collection, offering deeper indexing and more full-text searching of journals and magazines than any other discovery service. For more information, visit the EBSCO Web site at: www.ebsco.com. EBSCO is a division of EBSCO Industries Inc., one of the largest privately held companies in the United States.

Richland Library Launches EBSCO Discovery Service™ API
~ EDS API Helps Create Ideal User Experience for Library Customers ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — February 11, 2014 — Richland Library in South Carolina has created a truly unique user experience for its library customers, with the help of EBSCO Discovery Service™ API (EDS API) from EBSCO Information Services. By implementing EDS API, Richland Library was able to use their own website applications for their discovery user interface and still provide their users with all the functionality offered in EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS).

Although Richland Library wasn’t initially looking at discovery services, they soon realized after an evaluation, that EDS API can help develop the ideal user experience while also enabling creative control for its library. EDS API is a unique solution that complements and enhances the search experience for libraries with custom discovery solutions by providing access to premium content available through EBSCO Discovery Service, as well as a robust set of features and functionality. With EDS API, libraries can integrate critical components of EDS into their library solution including rich metadata, superior relevancy ranking, full-text linking, (including SmartLinks™), persistent links, custom links, facets, limiters and expanders, and book jacket images.

Virtual Services Manager at Richland Library, Kelly Coulter says they were focused on bringing services to their website so library customers could find what they were looking for with ease and also interact with the library in the way that they expect to. “My biggest priority was to stop sending people to a million different other websites and try to keep our visits on our own website. That way we can control the user experience more than if we’re just a portal sending customers off to other websites”. Coulter recently gave a presentation at Computers in Libraries based on this goal entitled “The Ideal User Experience”. The presentation still gets visits every day - even almost one year later.

Coulter explains how the process works for their library, “Our website makes an inquiry to EDS and passes along the search parameters. It then pulls back the information it can get from EDS and presents it on the library website in a way that’s formatted and styled to look like our website.”

Coulter had a commercial background before coming to the library and knew what was involved in order to be the go-to information source for their library customers. “I know from my background outside of libraries that you can’t train your customer to do anything. It has to be easy for them or they’re going to go somewhere else. I knew we had this really limited window to grab them and give them what they needed before they were just going to go to Google.”

Coulter’s vision of bringing services into the website rather than sending people off the website was a huge undertaking and involved many members of her team but Coulter says working with EBSCO has been very positive. “Everybody at EBSCO has been great. It can be iffy whether someone is willing to kind of get down in the weeds with you to do some of these things. It’s an inconvenience for a vendor to revamp things or think about things in a different way. I’ve had a really good experience so far.”

Over the next few months Richland Library hopes to do more usability studies and to see how the library customers are interacting with the library website. They plan to take advantage of some additional features and functionality that EDS provides including adding more facets to the interface to cater different user-level search needs.
