According to Brad LaJeunesse, Equinox President, "As a native of South Carolina, I’m especially proud to witness the growth of the SC LENDS group. The new member libraries have been very enthusiastic and could see the benefits of the combined catalog almost immediately."

Charlotte Johnston, Director of Clarendon County Library, says, "On our first day live with Evergreen, we opened a holds list with 59 requests for items from our main library and 24 items from our book mobile. North Bethesda, MD, November 8, 2012 – LibLime, a division of PTFS, announces the public release of LibLime Koha 4.14 with the Lucene Solr search engine.

LibLime Koha 4.14 represents the innovation, ideas, and talents of many professional librarians with whom LibLime enjoys working and with whom we look forward to a continued professional partnership in years to come.

Many of the features in LibLime Koha 4.14 were sponsored by a variety of libraries including the South Central Library System in Wisconsin, the Waldo Academic Directors Library Organization based in New York, the Colorado Library Consortium in Colorado, and the Pioneer Consortium in Nebraska.

LibLime Koha 4.14 fully integrates Solr into all areas where searches are executed for both staff and OPAC including: OPAC basic search page, OPAC advanced search page, staff landing page search box, staff advanced search, staff search for cataloging, and the persistent staff masthead search box. With Solr in place, indexing of imported records (single and batch) is now completed in minutes, richer results are retrieved through searches using stemming and auto-truncation, and facet search limits are now available for the entire search results list.

The libraries sponsoring development in LibLime Koha 4.14 key role in the design of the new features as well as the quality assurance process including alpha and beta testing. The SCLS group went live in production on LibLime Koha 4.14 and within the next two weeks, over 90 LibLime Koha libraries will be using Solr in production.

~EBSCO Publishing’s Familiar Platform and Patron Drive Acquisition Program Lead Utica College to Choose eBooks on EBSCOhost®~

IPSWICH, Mass. — November 8, 2012 — Utica College has chosen eBooks on EBSCOhost® from EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) to grow its e-book collection. The college was looking to expand its electronic collection and although they looked at other e-book vendors, the site’s familiarity and positive experience with EBSCOhost databases as well the benefits of EBSCO’s Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) Program convinced Utica College that eBooks on EBSCOhost was the right fit.

Utica College has been an EBSCOhost customer for many years so when looking to enhance its eBook collection, Jan Malcheski, coordinator of electronic resources at Utica College, says librarians believed that an easy transition to something familiar was an important factor. “We use and like EBSCOhost databases for our most heavily used courses of study — a familiar platform for our students was a key factor in a very competitive field.”

Functionality is another important factor when choosing an e-book platform. Creating an e-book experience that is easy to use and efficient was a priority for EBSCO when developing the interface. A dedicated landing page with Advanced Search Options, Browsing Options and Search History are some of the features that make the search experience successful. Malcheski also credits the functionality of the e-book carousels as a feature that impressed them. “The eBooks on EBSCOhost default interface that scrolls by covers is very attractive and (we think, anecdotally) encourages browsing.”

To help libraries build a collection with guaranteed usage, EBSCO offers a Patron Driven Acquisition program. A title on the PDA list is triggered for purchase when a patron directly accesses the title, guaranteeing that only those titles with significant usage are purchased. According to Malcheski, this was instrumental in Utica College’s decision to purchase eBooks on EBSCOhost. “Offering abundant PDA titles while not incurring any costs until triggered by genuine use is a major 'selling' point in budgeting. PDA represents an ideal low-risk investment for use of library resources.”

eBooks on EBSCOhost® offers more than 350,000 e-books and audiobooks that are available for purchase on an individual basis as well as in Subject Sets, Featured Collections and Custom Collections with a growing number of purchase, lease and subscription options as well as patron driven options. eBooks on EBSCOhost represents a deep collection of e-book content that is accessible via a variety of devices.

EBSCO proactively acquires new content in critical areas, based on the dynamic needs of libraries. Accessing the EBSCOhost platform for e-books and audiobooks saves librarians training time and adds a well-known search platform to the end user’s experience. Allowing end users to search for e-books and audiobooks along with their EBSCOhost database content improves the discoverability of library collections. Lowering the cost for libraries makes the decision to focus on or add to e-book and audiobook collections easier and more cost-effective.

eBooks on EBSCOhost are provided with no markups and no fees and can be ordered through the EBSCOhost® Collection Manager or YBP’s GOBI3 allowing libraries more freedom to make purchasing decisions. More information is available at http://www.ebscohost.com/ebooks.

IPSWICH, Mass. — November 6, 2012 — EBSCO Publishing’s (EBSCO) recent agreement with content partner, Accessible Archives, Inc. will enable additional primary source content to be discoverable within EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS). Metadata from Accessible Archives’ American County Histories to 1900 III: Southeast and The Lily will be added to the EDS Base Index, the most comprehensive and robust collection of metadata from the best content sources. The addition of this content will serve as a valuable resource for EDS users with an interest in American history and culture.

American County Histories to 1900 III: Southeast is one of three geographic grouping of American County Histories to 1900 — an essential resource for local historical and genealogical research. American County Histories to 1900 III: Southeast includes county histories with regional overviews and general community conditions for Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The resource includes information about neighbors, friends and associates of family members. Additional subject areas include government, medical and legal professions, churches, industries, schools, celebrations, fire departments, cemeteries, transportation, and local and regional geological conditions.

The Lily was the first newspaper for women which began its print run in 1849. The newspaper was edited by Amelia Bloomer from 1849 to 1854 and by Mary Birdsall during 1855 and 1856, after which it ceased publication. The Lily was originally conceived as a temperance journal but it gradually began to include articles about other subjects of interest to women and coverage soon turned to the issue of women’s rights. Many of these articles were written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a driving force behind the first women’s rights convention and the women’s rights movement.
Accessible Archives, Inc. is an electronic publisher of primary source full-text historical databases encompassing rich, comprehensive material found in leading historical periodicals, books and newspapers. Accessible Archives content also provides unique historical elements reflecting broad views of American history and culture. Information includes: eyewitness accounts of historical events, vivid descriptions of daily life, editorial observations, commerce as seen through advertisements and genealogical records.

EBSCO Discovery Service users will have the ability to search the full text of Accessible Archives resources bringing an extended list of results alongside additional library resources. EDS creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box—searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

Accessible Archives, Inc. is part of a growing list of publishers and other content partners that are taking part in EDS to bring more visibility to their content. Partners include the world’s largest scholarly journal & book publishers including Elsevier, Wiley Blackwell, Springer Science & Business Media, Taylor & Francis Informa, Sage Publications, and thousands of others. Partners also include content providers, such as LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), JSTOR, ARTstor, Credo Reference, World Book, ABC-CLIO, and many others.

EBSCO Discovery Service is quickly becoming the discovery selection for many libraries (www.ebscohost.com/discovery/eds-news), and an obvious partner for content providers. Because the service builds on the foundation provided by the EBSCOhost® platform, libraries gain a full user experience for discovering their collections/OPAC—which is not typical in the discovery space. Further still, in the many universities and other libraries where EBSCOhost is the most-used platform for premium research, users are not asked to change their pathways or habits for searching. There’s simply more to discover on the familiar EBSCOhost platform, and the same can be said for library administrators who can leverage their previous work with EBSCOadmin.
