The Chinook Library Network Goes Live on Koha with ByWater Solutions

ByWater Solutions, an open source community supporter and the U.S.’ forefront provider of Koha (www.koha-community.org) support, announced today that the Chinook Library Network in Oregon is now live on their installation of the Koha integrated library system.

ByWater Solutions completed the migration for the first libraries to join the network — Lincoln County Library District, Oregon Coast Community College, Siletz Public Library, Tillamook Bay Community College, Toledo Public Library and Waldport Public Library — in June and will be providing ongoing support and hosting services for them and other libraries as they join the network.

The Chinook Library Network has a collection of over 155,000 titles. Their customized online catalog can be viewed here: http://www.chinooklibraries.org.

Diedre Conkling, Library Director, commented on the Library Network’s move to Koha and ByWater:

“The Chinook Library Network is a newly formed network of independent city, county and community college libraries working together through a shared catalog. The first members of our new network went live with Koha on June 11, 2012. We are very happy to now be a part of the Koha community and are learning more every day on how to take full advantage of the Koha ILS and we hope to be able to add more libraries after we are all a little more skilled with the new system.”

Brendan Gallagher, CEO of ByWater commented on the new partnership:

“I’m always excited to see groups of libraries come together like those in the Chinook Library Network have. The collaboration and cooperation of various types of libraries such as those in the Chinook Library Network exemplifies the ideals and goals of the Open Source Software Community and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with them going forward.”

~ UK Parliamentary and Official Documents Added to EBSCO Discovery Service™ ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — July 26, 2012 —Dandy Booksellers’ Public Information Online (PIO) is the latest content source to be added to EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS) from EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO). Public Information Online is an archive of United Kingdom Parliamentary and official documents. The addition of this content will serve as a valuable resource for EDS users with interest in UK law, history and official information.

PIO collections are current and updated daily and include documents from the Westminster Parliament, Scottish Parliament, Northern Ireland Assembly, Welsh Assembly and non parliamentary material core documents from government departments and the Scottish Government. The agreement between EBSCO and Dandy Booksellers enables metadata from PIO to be added to the Base Index of EDS. PIO subscribers who are users of EBSCO Discovery Service will also have the ability to search the full text of these collections in order to find exactly what they need to keep abreast of Parliamentary Papers and core UK official documents.

Dandy Booksellers is part of a growing list of publishers and other content partners that are taking part in EDS to bring more visibility to their content. Partners include the world’s largest scholarly journal & book publishers including Elsevier, Wiley Blackwell, Springer Science & Business Media, Taylor & Francis Informa, Sage Publications, and thousands of others. Partners also include content providers, such as LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), JSTOR, ARTstor, Credo Reference, World Book, ABC-CLIO, and many others.

The EDS Base Index represents content from approximately 20,000 providers (and growing) in addition to metadata from another 70,000 book publishers, representing far more content providers and publishers than any other discovery service.

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box—searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

EBSCO Discovery Service is quickly becoming the discovery selection for many libraries (www.ebscohost.com/discovery/eds-news), and an obvious partner for content providers. Because the service builds on the foundation provided by the EBSCOhost® platform, libraries gain a full user experience for discovering their collections/OPAC—which is not typical in the discovery space. Further still, in the many universities and other libraries where EBSCOhost is the most-used platform for premium research, users are not asked to change their pathways or habits for searching. There’s simply more to discover on the familiar EBSCOhost platform, and the same can be said for library administrators who can leverage their previous work with EBSCOadmin™.

    About EBSCO Publishing
EBSCO Publishing is the producer of EBSCOhost®, the world’s premier for-fee online research service, including full-text databases, subject indexes, point-of-care medical reference, historical digital archives, and e-books. The company provides more than 350 databases and nearly 300,000 e-books. Through a library of tens of thousands of full-text journals and magazines from renowned publishers, EBSCO serves the content needs of all researchers (Academic, Medical, K-12, Public Library, Corporate, Government, etc.). EBSCO is also the provider of EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS), which provides each institution with a fast, single search box for its entire collection, offering deeper indexing and more full-text searching of journals and magazines than any other discovery service (www.ebscohost.com/discovery). For more information, visit the EBSCO Publishing Web site at: www.ebscohost.com, or contact: information@ebscohost.com. EBSCO Publishing is a division of EBSCO Industries Inc., one of the largest privately held companies in the United States.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 18, 2012, Medford, NJ—Information Today, Inc. [ITI] has announced the publication of The Embedded Librarian: Innovative Strategies for Taking Knowledge Where It's Needed by David Shumaker.

Here is the first comprehensive survey of the growing practice of "embedded librarianship"—a strategic model for placing information professionals into partnerships with the individuals and working groups that depend upon their knowledge and expertise. In The Embedded Librarian, David Shumaker looks at implementations in all types of organizations, identifies the characteristics of successful embedded librarians, and explains how information professionals in public, academic, school, medical, law, and other specialized library settings are using embedded librarianship principles to enhance their work and careers.

“We librarians must master new technologies for managing and delivering information. We must engage with knowledge and recognize the difference between information and knowledge. We must develop new organizational structures and new management techniques,” says Shumaker in the book’s Introduction. “Above all, we must establish new relationships with information users,—the people in our communities, universities, schools, corporations, agencies, and firms who need us. These imperatives are operating in every sector of the profession.”

As the way librarians access information changes with the improvements in technology, they must take on new roles in order to add value of their organizations. The approach in which librarians partner with information users, participate in information communities, develop relationships with teams, contribute directly to enhanced team and organizational performance. Shumaker been a successful manager of embedded library operations, and has been engaged in studying and researching the topic for over five years. He makes a compelling argument as to why librarians should embrace this approach as a way to provide value to the organization and their customers.

In The Embedded Librarian, David also presents a series of exercises from workshops that he has led that are intended to provide the tools librarians need in order to implement change in their own organization. He includes self-assessment questions, a step-by-step guide, and methods of evaluation to help the novice embedded librarian in his/her work. Readers can also connect with David through his companion website (www.embeddedlibrarian.com) which is designed to keep them up-to-date on the latest developments in embedded librarianship.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR
David Shumaker has served as clinical associate professor at the School of Library and Information Science, Catholic University of America, since August 2006. Dave’s teaching interests include the present and future roles of librarians in society, the management of libraries and information services, marketing, information systems, and library public services. His research and writing explore the changing roles of librarians in organizations of all types. He and his co-investigator, Mary Talley, were awarded the 2007 Special Libraries Association (SLA) Research Grant for their project, Models of Embedded Librarianship. Dave is a frequent speaker and panelist on embedded librarianship.

The Embedded Librarian: Innovative Strategies for Taking Knowledge Where It's Needed (240pp/softbound/$49.50/ISBN 978-1-57387-452-6) is published by Information Today, Inc.
