IPSWICH, Mass. — June 19, 2018 —EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and Modern Language Association (MLA) are working together to create the MLA International Bibliography with Full Text, a definitive research database for the international study of language and literature. Produced by MLA, the MLA International Bibliography with Full Text dates back to the 1920s and contains millions of citations as well as full text for more than 1,000 journals.

MLA International Bibliography with Full Text covers a broad range of humanities disciplines related to global languages and literature. Content includes materials published in the areas of literatures and languages from around the world, including:

Full text in the MLA International Bibliography with Full Text includes coverage for journals published in more than 50 countries well as many of the most-used journals in the MLA International Bibliography. Indexing is conducted by the MLA’s staff of highly trained subject matter experts and by contributing scholars.

MLA Executive Director Paula Krebs says the MLA International Bibliography with Full Text is an essential tool for research in all aspects of global languages and literature. “Allowing scholars to access the articles they’ve found in the bibliography with just one click is a game changer. We’re thrilled that full text of many of the most respected journals in our fields will now be available to bibliography users.”

EBSCO Information Services’ Senior Vice President of Product Management Michael Laddin says the full text version of MLA International Bibliography provides a definitive resource for humanities researchers. “By combining the most comprehensive bibliography of its kind, with the full text from the most-used scholarly journals in an easy to use interface, students and researchers in the humanities gain a very powerful and unique resource covering all aspects of modern languages and literature.”

The MLA Directory of Periodicals can be fully accessed in the MLA International Bibliography with Full Text. The directory provides detailed information on more than 6,000 journals and book series that fall within the scope of the bibliography. Additionally, users will be able to access the MLA Thesaurus, the association's controlled vocabulary used to assign descriptors to each record in the bibliography. It also provides a searchable directory of authors' names with links to brief descriptive notes.

The Largest Digital Archive of Amateur Newspapers in the U.S. Written by Young Adults, Deemed the Social Media of the Era

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – June 12, 2018 – Gale, a Cengage company, is introducing a new digital archive that’s considered the social media of the 19th century and gives students and researchers a unique inside look at how teens and young adults of the period expressed themselves and their opinions to the world. Amateur Newspapers from the American Antiquarian Society is the largest and most extensive digital archive in the U.S., providing authentic newspaper writings published by the younger generation of the 19th century. The archive gives an unprecedented look at how youth viewed themselves, their hometowns, the country and the world around them during the era, drawing researchers into the world of America’s first youth subcultures. Read Gale’s blog about the new archive, here: http://bit.ly/2JCCtkj.

This one-of-a-kind archive features tens of thousands of issues, and includes editorials, original short fiction, essays, poetry and more. It provides an abundance of resources for researchers looking to make connections with the era, and delivers compelling insight into the voice of young Americans of the period. By providing a broader understanding of amateur publications in the 19th century, researchers can compare the political and social issues facing young adults of the time with those confronting society today.

Amateur Newspapers’ extraordinary view into youth culture of the 19th century makes it one of the most significant collections of adolescent journalism that holds a unique place in the history of journalism.

Amateur Newspapers from the American Antiquarian Society source archives offers:

    • more than 80,000 pages of content, making it the largest and most comprehensive resource of its kind for the study of 19th century youth culture;

    • over 3,000 individual newspaper titles from 48 states in the U.S. and several from Canada; and

    • insight into the interests and lives of ordinary people and youth during the 19th century, rather than big-business printers and publishers.

~ Consortium to Test FOLIO Services for Colleges and Universities of Various Sizes and Multiple Hosting and Service Support Needs ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — June 5, 2018 — EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and the Five Colleges Consortium have agreed to an EBSCO FOLIO Beta Partnership. The consortium includes Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. These institutions will leverage the FOLIO Library Services Platform in a variety of institutional scenarios.

The consortium is made up of four liberal arts institutions and one Association of Research Libraries (ARL) site (University of Massachusetts Amherst) which brings a variety of opportunities to work with technical differences and various staff sizes. While the consortium has a shared physical collection and a shared e-collection, the institutions purchase their own e-content separately. EBSCO also will be able to prove out a different migration path to the ILS used by Five Colleges.

FOLIO, which stands for the Future of Libraries is Open, is a community coming together to develop a reimagined library services platform, one that supports traditional resource management requirements and functionality, yet is engineered for innovation and growth through industry collaboration. FOLIO allows for extensibility into new services for libraries and will dramatically change the technology ecosystem available to libraries, service providers and technology developers.

Interim Associate Dean for Library Technology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Steven Bischof, says the Five Colleges Consortium sees FOLIO as a new way for libraries of all sizes to innovate. “FOLIO presents a vision for the future of libraries and as a beta partner, we will be able to ensure that FOLIO is a service for libraries of all shapes and sizes. As we work with EBSCO to map out common training and change management, we believe we will be helping create a hosting and service support for libraries of all sizes with different staff sizes that are looking toward a future based on open source technology.”

EBSCO Information Services Director of SaaS Innovation, Andrew Nagy, says the consortium provides unique challenges that EBSCO wants to solve. “As we look to create the best hosting and support services for FOLIO libraries, it is essential to work with multiple scenarios. The Five Colleges Consortium brings an all-so-important perspective on the needs of consortia. By working with the five campuses in this consortium, we will be able to ensure FOLIO and EBSCO’s services are in line with the needs of consortium of all types and sizes, as well as bring even more innovation to the FOLIO platform.”

The Five Colleges Consortium will use EBSCO Discovery Service™ as the library discovery interface so the colleges do not need to use multiple platforms for traditional catalog functions such as checkouts and placing holds.

FOLIO, a community collaboration to develop an open source Library Services Platform (LSP), is being built in collaboration with dozens of organizations worldwide. The EBSCO beta program is an instrumental step in developing and establishing FOLIO as the primary platform for library management available to institutions around the world. EBSCO FOLIO Beta Partners will be testing FOLIO in large, real-world environments demonstrating the viability of the service and its role as a Library Services Platform.

EBSCO and other vendors ultimately plan to offer hosting and service enabling libraries of all sizes to leverage the full benefits of FOLIO and extend the reach of open source LSP software, which has been seen as only available to sites with large technical staffs. While institutions may decide to leverage their staff to run FOLIO, many see hosting and service options as freeing up staff to take on other projects.

    About FOLIO
FOLIO is a collaborative effort among libraries, vendors, developers and consortia that leverages open source technology and a community-based effort to redefine library services and innovate based on library futures. By building on what libraries need and by leveraging library expertise as well as vendor capacity and velocity, FOLIO is designed to move libraries forward, build on the services they provide and redefine the role libraries play within their institution. FOLIO also levels the playing field and makes open source technology available to all institutions regardless of size or staffing. FOLIO brings vendors together to innovate and host services for customers and introduces open source as a service to libraries.
