IPSWICH, Mass. — June 6, 2017 — The American Library Association (ALA) and EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) are making it easier for seven librarians to attend the ALA Annual Conference after winning EBSCO-ALA scholarships.. Each scholarship provides up to $1,000 to help defray the cost of travel and other expenses to the conference taking place in Chicago on June 22-27.

These awards are given annually to help facilitate the rich opportunities for professional development and networking that the conference offers librarians. Applications were judged by an ALA-designated jury.

The scholarship winners include five first-time attendees from the U.S. and beyond. The winners are:
    • Elizabeth DeZouche, Instruction Librarian, Thomas University Library, Thomasville, Georgia.
    • Hannah Buckland, Director of Library Services, Bezhigoogahbow Library, Leech Lake Tribal College, Cass Lake, Minnesota.
    • Heather Brown, Teacher & Librarian (Grades K-8), St. Joseph School, Herndon, Virginia.
    • Iman Powe-Maynard, School Librarian, Leonard Dober Elementary, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.
    • Lauren Seegmiller, Public Services Apprentice, Norlin Library, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado.
    • Ramon Masis Rojas, Associate Professor, Library Information Science School, University of Costa Rica, San José, Costa Rica.
    • Regina Sierra Carter, Teaching & Learning Librarian, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia.

As part of the application process, librarians were asked to write an essay explaining how attending the conference will contribute to their professional development. Hannah Buckland of the Leech Lake Tribal College in Cass Lake, Minnesota wrote how “the knowledge…and connections [she] make[s]” at the conference would help to “continue innovating digital literacy outreach across the [Leech Lake] Reservation.”

EBSCO is dedicated to supporting the library community around the world and maintains a long tradition of co-sponsoring scholarships to ALA conferences that provide funds for conference registration, travel and expenses. The scholarship recipients will be honored by EBSCO and ALA representatives during the conference at a breakfast on Sunday, June 25th.
