PROVO, Utah, January 10, 2014 — Backstage experienced a 30% increase in contracts for authority control and metadata enhancement services in 2013 as a result of rising demand from libraries for the improvement and accuracy of local bibliographic information for print and electronic materials.

To make collection management decisions based on sound metrics, an increasing number of institutions are seeking accurate bibliographic information. Libraries are carefully refining collection management practices, focusing more on patron-driven acquisitions, examining materials purchasing practices, and planning for cooperative print programs.

Backstage’s vice president of automation services, Nate Cothran notes:

“Backstage is excited to be at the forefront in consulting with libraries on their metadata challenges. Developing and maintaining an integrated set of automated processing services is timely for today’s complex library metadata market. From transitioning to RDA, to ILS migration involving dozens or hundreds of libraries in a union catalog, to working with both MARC and non-MARC data in the same project, Backstage is experienced and well-equipped.”

Libraries with bibliographic record projects in-process or recently completed include:

    • Art Institute of Chicago
    • Clemson University, S.C.
    • Drexel University, Pa.
    • Edmonton Public Library, Alberta
    • King County Library System, Wash.
    • Murray State University, Ky.
    • Northern Michigan University
    • Southern New Hampshire University
    • University of Edinburgh, Scotland
    • University of Minnesota
    • University of San Francisco
