North Bethesda, MD, September 14, 2012. LibLime, a division of PTFS, and WALDO (Westchester Academic Library Directors Organization) announce the production release of a browser-based mobile application for LibLime Academic Koha.

Library staff at the University of Hartford have developed mOPAC, which provides patrons with access to the University Libraries’ rich collections via mobile devices. After successful deployment with the University Libraries’ LibLime Academic Koha system, the University has teamed with LibLime to integrate the mOPAC application into LibLime Academic Koha 5.0. This contribution to LibLime Academic Koha 5.0 is a welcome enhancement to start the 2012 Fall semester.

Ben Ide, Head of Technical Services at the University Libraries, says, “This mobile access to the LibLime Academic Koha OPAC interface makes searching and checking your user account easy from handheld devices. This is the same information already in your catalog, only streamlined, and does not require an additional application in order to work on Apple iOS, Google Android, and Windows phones. The University of Hartford is glad to be able to contribute this innovation to the community of LibLime Academic Koha users. We hope that it will be as well received by your patrons as it is by ours.”

New OCLC WorldShare Metadata collection management functionality offers more efficient ways for libraries to manage electronic resources and improve user access to those valuable collections.

WorldShare Metadata collection management automatically delivers WorldCat MARC records for electronic materials and ensures the metadata and access URLs for these collections are continually updated, providing library users better access to these materials, and library staff more time for other priorities.

OCLC worked with libraries in North America to beta test the new functionality as part of OCLC WorldShare Metadata services. Pilots of the new functionality are planned in different regions around the world.

“The WorldShare Metadata collection management service is a step forward because we can now use the records in the WorldCat database to provide access to our electronic collections in a way that incorporates access changes quickly and easily,” said Sarah Haight Sanabria, Electronic Resources Cataloger, Central University Libraries, Southern Methodist University, who participated in the beta test.

Libraries use the collection management functionality to define and configure e-book and other electronic collections in the WorldCat knowledge base. They then automatically receive initial and updated, customized WorldCat MARC records for all e-titles from one source. With the combination of WorldCat knowledge base holdings, WorldCat holdings and WorldCat MARC records, library users gain access to the same set of titles and content in WorldCat Local, WorldCat.org, the local library catalog or other discovery interfaces.

OCLC WorldShare Metadata collection management services are available to all libraries with an OCLC cataloging subscription and work with other components of OCLC WorldShare Management Services as well as other library systems.

“WorldShare Metadata is a core part of OCLC’s strategy to provide integrated Webscale solutions to support the complete library management workflow, including selection, acquisition, metadata, license management, discovery, resource sharing and analytics,” said David Whitehair, OCLC Senior Product Manager. “As with all Webscale solutions, OCLC will continue to add new capabilities and services over time.”

OCLC is conducting free webinars to explain more about this new OCLC WorldShare Metadata collection management functionality. Those interested should plan to attend one of the following webinar sessions:

    • Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 3:00 – 4:00 pm Eastern Time.
    • Thursday, September 20, 2012, 3:00 – 4:00 pm Eastern Time.

Visit http://www.oclc.org/worldshare-metadata for more information about WorldShare Metadata services, and to register for a webinar.

~ EBSCO Publishing Achieves Recognition for Second Year in a Row ~

IPSWICH, Mass. —September 13, 2012 — EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) has been named to this year’s InformationWeek 500, an annual listing of the nation’s most innovative users of business technology. This is the second year in a row that EBSCO has achieved this recognition. The annual list was revealed on September 11th at a gala awards ceremony at the exclusive InformationWeek 500 Conference which took place at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort, Dana Point, CA.

EBSCO was ranked 203rd on this year’s InformationWeek 500 – a list of the top technology innovators in the U.S. EBSCO Publishing is a global leader providing online research databases—more than 350 learning and reference products—to corporations, universities, libraries and other institutions around the world.

EBSCO earned its ranking on this year’s InformationWeek 500 for a development enabling libraries to benefit from the improved integration of content through a unified interface. EBSCO released e-books and audiobooks via EBSCOhost in order to better serve the needs of library end users and also offer end users ease of access along with a familiar, powerful user experience.

By integrating e-books into EBSCOhost, EBSCO brought these essential resources to a familiar and easy to use interface to meet the needs of any library—from the serious academic researcher looking for the latest information on a subject who will now see e-books integrated with periodical content to the public library patron looking for an e-book or audiobook to download to the latest mobile device. EBSCO will continue its goal to develop an e-book service that provides the best user experience and unparalleled content along with the most flexible acquisition and licensing arrangements.

EBSCO Publishing’s Vice President of Sales, E-books and Audiobooks, Scott Wasinger, is thrilled with this recognition saying it demonstrates that EBSCO is moving in the right direction with the development of its e-book and audiobook services. “We are honored with this achievement. E-books and audiobooks are becoming core services for libraries and as patrons and researchers come to expect more from these resources, libraries are in turn looking to EBSCO to help them stay ahead of growing demand. EBSCO continues to work with libraries and publishers to expand the e-book options available to libraries so they can best serve the needs of their end users.”

“The InformationWeek 500 has recognized the most innovative users of business technology for 24 years, and this year’s innovations were particularly impressive,” said InformationWeek Editor In Chief Rob Preston. “What the editors looked for are unconventional approaches—new technologies, new models, new ways of grabbing business opportunities and solving complex business problems with IT.” InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual 500 listing, and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments, and administrative practices of America’s best-known companies. Past overall winners include PACCAR Inc., The Vanguard Group, CME Group, National Semiconductor, Con-Way, and Principal Financial Group. The InformationWeek 500 rankings are unique among corporate rankings as it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders. Additional details on the InformationWeek 500 can be found online at www.informationweek.com/iw500/.
