We Will Not Be Shushed: A 24-Hour Read-In

    June 11 and 12, 2011
    4:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Brooklyn, New York -- May 2011 -- Save NYC Libraries Campaign and Urban Librarians Unite announce We Will Not Be Shushed: A 24-Hour Read-In in support of New York City's public libraries, to be held June 11-12, 2011, on the steps of Brooklyn Public Library's Central Library, Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn, New York, USA.

    Official website: www.savenyclibraries.org

The We Will Not Be Shushed 24-Hour Read-In brings New Yorkers together for 24-hours of continuous public reading to focus attention on the disastrous budget cuts faced by New York City's public libraries. From 4PM Saturday to 4PM Sunday, in 15 minute increments, authors, supporters, and library staff will read aloud in one continous voice it show their support for library services.

Mayor Bloomberg's Executive Budget for FY'11 calls for a reduction in funding of $90.3 million dollars. This is a cumulative 40% decrease since FY’08 and will devastate library services in NYC, creating a giant hole where information sevices, job, help, ESOL classes, adult and early childhood literacy and teen services used to be.

Last year the Read-In had approximately 1200 attendees over the course of the 24 hours and received extensive coverage in print, radio, and television media. This year’s Read-In is part of an aggressive activism campaign for libraries in the city which included a mass hug of the Schwarzman library with 200 attendees and an ongoing postcard campaign.

Los Angeles, CA – June 9, 2011. LAC Group is pleased to announce the addition of Ms. Garland Fuller as a Recruiter who will be based in our Los Angeles office. Ms. Fuller brings more than ten years of professional recruiting experience to LAC Group. She served as Staff Recruiter for five years in a large law firm in San Francisco, and as the Regional Staffing Manager in a publicly-traded real estate brokerage. She has her master’s in Human Resources Development and bachelor’s in American Studies. She looks forward to learning the nuances of the information industry and working with many of the professionals leading the innovations in our field.

The recruiting department at LAC Group sees the growing need for recruiters in the information industry as evidence of the growing demand across many vertical industries for highly-specialized and technical information workers. As the jobs of information professionals continue to demand a complex and often difficult-to-find blend of technical knowledge and subject matter expertise, so the sourcing and recruiting of these professionals becomes more problematic for the organization in need of them. That’s where library and information recruiters come in. Our specialist recruiters maintain an awareness of where such specialists work and gather for professional development — and they present them to the organization in search of those skills.

“We are excited to have Garland Fuller joining our team,” said Keith Gurtzweiler, VP of Recruiting at LAC Group. “Garland has had extensive experience working as an internal recruiter, and this experience allows her to understand the frustrations many of our clients feel when they cannot locate that ideal blend of skills and knowledge they need to complement their team. From the candidate’s perspective, she knows what it takes to ‘wow’ the hiring manager and land the offer. Her knowledge will add a lot to our overall recruiting expertise.”
