Gale’s Digital Scholar Lab Removes Barriers to Entry into Digital Scholarship, Streamlining Workflows, Driving Visualizations and Discoveries

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – September 11, 2018 – Gale, a Cengage company, is changing the way scholars and students access and analyze raw text data. Gale’s Digital Scholar Lab, a cloud-based research environment launched by the company today, allows students and researchers to apply natural language processing tools to raw text data (OCR) from Gale Primary Sources archives in a single research platform. This new research environment removes key barriers to entry into digital scholarship, enabling users at any level to perform textual analysis on large corpora of historical texts, streamlining the workflow process to help generate new research insights.

This new platform marks a major milestone in the innovative evolution of Gale’s unrivaled primary source collections and the research possibilities that emerge from natural language processing. Read our blog on Gale’s Digital Scholar Lab, here: http://bit.ly/2N4dVqn.

Gale’s Digital Scholar Lab provides a critical infrastructure for digital humanities research and instruction as well as simplifies complex workflows by integrating the most commonly used open source tools. This combination of content and tools allows researchers to analyze texts in ways that are unattainable through traditional close reading, allowing configuration of tools and content sets to meet users’ specific needs in a single research environment.

View a video of Gale's Digital Humanities Specialist, Wendy Kurtz, discussing what the Digital Scholar Lab is, why it was created and what makes it unique, here: http://bit.ly/2CJGrc0.

Gale’s Digital Scholar Lab is built on user-based design principles that helps keep research activities organized and accessible. It combines analysis-ready raw text data with digital tools and algorithms to generate visualizations and discoveries that are the hallmark of data mining and digital scholarship. Importantly, the entirely new platform has been architected for interoperability to flexibly allow future sharing of analytical tools and to promote the global spread of digital scholarship.

Gale’s Digital Scholar Lab supports a broad spectrum of users:

    • Scholars: The Digital Scholar Lab gives access to large data sets that are easily mined and edited for use in custom applications and digital tools without costly and time-intensive data clean-up.

    • Librarians: With Gale’s Digital Scholar Lab, libraries can provide researchers of all levels the opportunity to engage with the humanities in entirely new ways without capital investment in costly computing environments, thus strengthening the library’s relationships across campus and increasing the value of its collections.

    • Students: As a teaching tool, the Digital Scholar Lab provides a familiar navigational interface style for students new to text data mining and introduces them to textual analysis in a streamlined manner.

As academic libraries continually shift to keep up with the changing needs of research and scholarship, many are looking at the digital humanities as an opportunity for closer collaboration with faculty and other campus stakeholders.

With the Digital Scholar Lab, Gale has created a research environment that helps bridge the gap that often exists between scholarly resources and faculty researchers/students. By shrinking the distance between available content and natural language processing tools, Gale’s Digital Scholar Lab provides access to open source and proprietary tools that are frequently required to support libraries that are investing in becoming “Digital Humanities Centers.”

With Gale’s Digital Scholar Lab, users can:

    • Search and create robust content/data sets from their library’s Gale Primary Sources collections.

    • Use analysis tools and visualize results.

    • Organize research and manage long-term projects.

    • Download and share visualizations, statistical data and textual data sets.

“Gale pioneered digital delivery of primary source archives making unique special library collections accessible to researchers globally,” said Marc Cormier, Director of Product Management for the Humanities at Gale. “Today, we launch a new platform equal to the task of analyzing massive content collections such a Gale Primary Sources with the intent of promoting new discoveries and broadening access to the tools of digital humanities.”

Facet Publishing announce the publication of Archival Futures edited by Caroline Brown.

It is widely acknowledged that the archival discipline is facing a time of change. The digital world has presented changes in how records are created, used, stored and communicated. At the same time, there is increased public debate over issues such as ownership of and access to information and its authenticity and reliability in a networked and interconnected world.

Archival Futures draws on the contributions of a range of international experts to consider the current archival landscape and imagine the archive of the future. Firmly rooted in current professional debate and scholarship, the book offers thought provoking and accessible chapters that aim to challenge and inspire archivists globally and to encourage debate about their futures. Chapters cover the role of archives in relation to individuals, organisations, communities and society; how appraisal, arrangement, description and access might be affected in the future; changing societal expectations in terms of access to information, how information is exchanged, and how things are recorded and remembered; the impact of new technologies, including blockchain and automation; the place of traditional archives and what ‘the archive’ is or might become; the future role of the archive profession; and archives as authentic and reliable evidence

Tom Nesmith (University of Manitoba), said 'Archives play a unique and powerful role in making the past available for an extraordinary array of current purposes. But do archives have a future, particularly given disruptive changes in communication technologies? Archival Futures addresses this and other challenges to find ways forward for the now pivotal role of archives in society.'

The book will appeal to an international audience of students, academics and practitioners in archival science, records management, and library and information science.

~ Collaboration Will Aggregate and Assemble Relevant Open Education Resources and Institution’s Library Materials to Improve the Teaching and Learning Experience ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — September 5, 2018 — EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and Intellus Learning, an educational platform as a service company, have partnered to provide academic libraries with a content curation, assignment, recommendation and analytics tool. The collaboration will benefit college and university customers as they strive to offer affordable, reliable and relevant resources to students, while supporting faculty’s teaching and learning goals.

Intellus Learning empowers instructors to access high-quality open education resources (OER) and other openly licensed content, as well as their institution’s academic library materials to help meet budgetary goals. By offering curated content, Intellus Learning enables instructors to quickly capture robust and affordable course materials. Students can seamlessly engage with assigned course materials via the institution’s learning management system, including all EBSCO resources to which the library subscribes.

According to Craig Bleyer, the General Manager of the Institutional Business at Macmillan Learning, “Our customers are rightfully focused on providing the most affordable learning experiences that engage and retain students. Yet, finding the right mix of content and tools that answers both teaching and institutional objectives can be challenging because of the amount of time it takes to curate and assemble course objects. Via this partnership with EBSCO, we are providing a powerful search and discovery tool, which enables instructors to identify the highest-quality and best-rated free and openly-licensed content, as well as access library content to make the most efficient use of content already available at their institution.”

The technology integration between EBSCO and Intellus Learning helps institutions launch and maintain affordability initiatives by facilitating efficient and insight-laden access to high quality, free learning content. Through an intuitive interface, faculty can curate and quickly assign pertinent OER and library content to students. The Intellus engine also offers a robust reporting dashboard that provides real-time insight into students’ engagement with the assigned materials. This pre-built feedback loop enables faculty to tweak the curriculum on the fly to suit students’ needs.

EBSCO Information Services Senior Vice President of Business Development, Mark Herrick, says the integration will help libraries promote their valuable resources and improve the workflow process for faculty. “The collaboration with Intellus Learning allows for interoperability that enables libraries to increase use and efficiency of their collections. By integrating technologies, the content selection process works better and faster for faculty while enabling them to select from library resources in the context of their courses and already subscribed to by their institution.”
