    Leiden / Boston / Paderborn / Singapore / Beijing – 10 August 2018

An international consortium of research institutes, universities and non-academic partners in six European countries has been awarded with a research grant from the Department for Research and Innovation of the European Commission in June 2018. Mediating Islam Digital Age (MIDA) is coordinated by the ‘Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique’ (CNRS) in Paris. The consortium includes twelve beneficiaries and thirteen partner organisations, Brill being one of them.

The MIDA-project rests on the premise that digitisation and technological innovation do have a tremendous impact on Islam, the effects of which are diverse and ubiquitous, and they are reminiscent of technical revolutions in the past such as print technology.

MIDA assesses these developments in all their dimensions by formulating three major questions: How does digitisation (1) shape Islam (i.e. beliefs, practices, societies, political organisations, social institutions, and outlooks); (2) modify the relations Muslims have with their past; (3) modify and reorganize scholarship and research on Islam?

Innovative Training Networks programs are designed to combine scientific research with an intensive training trajectory for young scholars in order to equip them with the necessary comprehensive knowledge and skills. These researchers work in an inter-sectoral, interdisciplinary and international environment to deepen their knowledge and to find answers to pressing contemporary societal issues. As a result of the partnership, in the next few years several PhD candidates will fulfil an internship with Brill.

Facet Publishing announce the release of Records, Information and Data: Exploring the role of record-keeping in an information culture by Geoffrey Yeo.

In a society that increasingly emphasizes digital information and data, questions arise about the place of longer-established concepts such as records and archives. Records, Information and Data sets out to investigate the relationships between information (or data) and records, and, to examine the place of record-making and record-keeping in today’s information culture.

Eric Ketelaar, Professor Emeritus of Archivistics at the University of Amsterdam said, “Yeo’s book argues that the prevalent discourse which equates records simply with information or data is wrong. His innovative analysis of the performativity of records results in a fascinating new conceptual and practical understanding of the roles of records and archives in social action. Professionals in handling records, information and data, as well as users of records and archives and everyone interested in ‘the archive’, will gain from this perceptive and highly readable book a new comprehension of past, present and future information cultures.”

The book starts with an exploration of the concepts of records and archives; setting today’s record-keeping and archival practices in their historical context whilst examining changing perceptions of how these concepts are understood. It asks whether and how far understandings derived from the fields of information management and data science/administration can enhance our knowledge of how records function. Finally, it argues that concepts of information and data cannot provide a fully adequate basis for reflective professional thinking about records and that record-keeping practices still have distinct and important roles to play in contemporary society.

Professor Emeritus at The University of British Columbia, Terry Eastwood praised "Yeo's searching examination" and said that "everyone in the records field or aspiring to enter it should read this book and ponder its many cogent arguments."

~Partnership will Create a Unified Acquisition Workflow to the Koha Open Source Library System ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — August 7, 2018 — A new partnership between GOBI® Library Solutions from EBSCO (GOBI Library Solutions), a division of EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO), and ByWater Solutions is aimed at helping Koha libraries. Libraries using the Koha Open Source ILS are now able to use new functionality to streamline the acquisitions process. The GobiAPI Plug-in, which allows Koha systems to fully integrate with the GOBI platform in real-time, will now facilitate the immediate transfer of bibliographic and order data.

The result of this partnership is the ability for Koha users to easily search for e-book and print titles in the extensive GOBI online catalog. All orders placed in GOBI will be automatically delivered to Koha, creating a brief bibliographic and order record in the open source ILS. The plug-in, which will work on Koha Version 17.05 and higher, will further enhance the workflow process and make it easier and more efficient for customers to locate titles and place orders.

EBSCO Information Services Vice President of Sales, United Kingdom, Ireland and the Nordic Countries, Gareth Smith, says the partnership with ByWater Solutions enhances GOBI Library Solutions’ ability to develop more efficient, streamlined workflows. “We’re committed to working with partners like ByWater to improve technologies that make the lives of librarians easier, ultimately improving the experience for library patrons. Librarians at sites using the Koha Open Source Library System will now be able to quickly find and acquire new titles, building more robust print and e-book collections.”

Brendan Gallagher, CEO of ByWater Solutions stated: “We are thrilled to introduce the new GOBI plugin to the Koha community and are excited to expand on our already robust partnership with EBSCO and GOBI Library Solutions. By streamlining these processes, we are improving the workflows of libraries using our products to make their day to day jobs more efficient and streamlined.”
This development is a result of an agreement between ByWater Solutions, the American University of Rome and EBSCO. GOBI customers interested in learning more and setting up the workflow should contact their GOBI representative or view the plug-in specification on GitHub.
