Facet Publishing announces the publication of Resource Discovery for the Twenty-First Century Library: Case studies and perspectives on the role of IT in user engagement and empowerment edited by Simon McLeish.

Of all the parts of modern library provision, discovery services are the most clearly affected by developments in IT, from databases to search engines to linked data to machine learning.

Discovery is central to academic activities at all levels, and it is a key aspect of the relationship between libraries, museums and their communities.

Resource Discovery for the Twenty-First Century Library is made up of a range of contributions, written by both local and global experts. Specific areas of discovery, implementations and ideas are explored in detail in order to analyse the ways in which libraries are tackling the challenges facing them in discovery in the (post)-Google era.

Readers can benefit from enhanced discovery in both an inbound and outbound manner. This book will help to make locally held resources globally discoverable, and it also presents global resources to your local user community.

The book questions what resource discovery means today and offers case studies from around the world that show interesting approaches to discovery. Close analysis of how users approach discovery, and how to understand and make the best use of discovery methods such as Internet search engines are key features of this text. Furthermore, readers can expect guidance on linked open data and discovery, and how to use limited resources to make it possible to find a collection.

What might the future of discovery look like? Simon McLeish said of the book ‘Resource Discovery for the Twenty-First Century Library surveys the current state and looks at future developments in discovery, one of the most important functions of libraries in the twenty first century.’
