EBSCO Information Services Partners with Code Ocean to Invest in Open Research and Promote Reproducibility
~ Partnership Lays the Groundwork for the Growth and Impact of Open Research ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — January 21, 2020 — A new strategic partnership between EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and Code Ocean will provide to the global research community a platform to facilitate the sharing and reuse of computational code and data. It guarantees the reproducibility of reported research, and it makes research open, organized, accessible and interoperable.

Today, with advances in technology that enable us to distribute far more than just words on pages, researchers, academic institutions, funders and publishers are increasingly demanding tools that make computationally-based research intuitive, collaborative, interoperable and endurable. EBSCO’s investment and reseller agreement highlights the critical importance that it assigns to promoting and supporting those requirements. Building upon Code Ocean’s current success with publishers, EBSCO will act as a partner, extending the potential reach and impact of Code Ocean to institutions around the world.

Code Ocean grew out of co-founder Simon Adar’s postdoctoral work at Cornell-Tech. Like many scientists, Adar looked to previously published works and tried to build upon them. He quickly discovered how difficult it is to reuse code and data and how hard it was to prove reproducibility, even of published findings. Together with co-founder and Chief Technical Officer Ram Dayan, they assembled a team to build a platform with the purpose to increase the pace of science.

Code Ocean CEO Simon Adar says that EBSCO’s long history of serving academia to improve research workflows and strong position in the market makes them an ideal partner for Code Ocean. “Working together with EBSCO, as an investor and as a reseller, will help bring Code Ocean to a global audience for publishing, reproducibility, and day-to-day research.”

EBSCO Information Services CEO Tim Collins says investing in Code Ocean and helping to make it more available is a way to address the problems researchers face and provide publishers and institutions with more options. “By investing in and supporting the work being done by Code Ocean, EBSCO will be able to address research activity improvements and foster collaborations that bring the research workflow full circle, expose critical research code and data and support the reproducibility of research.”

This partnership aligns with EBSCO’s recent partnership with Arkivum, leveraging EBSCO’s SaaS-based portfolio and Arkivum’s Perpetua which enables long-term data management. The Code Ocean announcement coincides with the announcement of EBSCO’s partnership with protocols.io which provides researchers with access to research methods, another essential element in the research workflow.

    About Code Ocean
Code Ocean is a cloud-based computational reproducibility platform that provides researchers and developers an easy way to create, share, discover, and run scientific code. Researchers and scientists can develop and collaborate on code and share it as executable code using a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) minted by Code Ocean to support citable attribution. Code Ocean received the 2018 ALPSP Award for Innovation in Publishing for its pioneering work with world-leading publishers to embed researchers’ working code within published research articles while ensuring researchers retain copyright. Code Ocean was founded in 2015 with the goal of saving researchers time and advancing science by making code more reusable and research more easily reproducible. codeocean.com

EBSCO Information Services Awards Five Scholarships for Librarians to Attend the 2020 ALA Midwinter Meeting
~ Annual Scholarship Pays for the Travel Expenses of Librarians Attending National Conference ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — January 14, 2020 —EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) has awarded five librarians, who are all first-time attendees, $1,500 scholarships to attend the 2020 ALA Midwinter Meeting, January 24th-28th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The scholarships are co-sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA). The scholarship recipients will be honored by EBSCO and ALA representatives at a breakfast during the conference.

The EBSCO ALA Midwinter Scholarship helps defray the cost of attending the conference and allows the librarians to benefit from the professional development and networking opportunities available at ALA-Midwinter. As part of the application process, librarians were asked to write an essay on the topic of “What do you think the biggest factors for change will be as libraries expand into non-traditional areas of service, introduce new technologies and endeavor to support their changing research communities?”

    This year’s scholarship winners are:

    • Sharon Kay Edwards, Branch Librarian, Motlow State Community College, McMinnville, Tennessee

    • Rachelle Brandel, Adult Services Librarian, Ferguson Municipal Public Library, Ferguson, Missouri

    • Lauren Frazier, Librarian, Santa Clarita Public Library, Valencia, California

    • Haley Leigh Walters, Librarian, George Washington High School, Danville, Virginia

    • Bel Outwater, Library Manager, Auburn Public Library, Auburn, Georgia

The winners effectively described what the biggest factors for change will be as libraries expand. Haley Leigh Walters, Librarian at George Washington High School, believes, “With such a transient society, library outreach is more important than ever. Libraries realize they cannot do everything alone, nor within the confines of their buildings. Having a community network is essential for libraries to adapt and thrive, not just survive.” Sharon Kay Edwards, Branch Librarian at Motlow State Community College, wrote, “It’s imperative to the future of librarianship — and the cataloging of and access to future information — that we think outside of, ‘how we’ve always done it.’ We need to be innovative in creating user experiences, information platforms, community programs, lectures, conferences, and more. We must learn to speak, write, and teach code. We must dream beyond our current services and think of what could be done if there were no walls — because the truth is, there aren’t. We must empower other librarians and library staff to stretch their comfort levels to meet the future patron’s informational needs.”

EBSCO is dedicated to supporting the professional development of librarians around the world and has a long-standing tradition of co-sponsoring scholarships to ALA conferences, providing funds for conference registration, travel, and expenses.

    About ALA
The American Library Association (ALA) is a nonprofit professional organization of more than 65,000 librarians, library trustees, and other friends of libraries dedicated to providing and improving library services and promoting the public interest in a free and open information society: www.ala.org.
