DynaMed® Founder Leads Effort to Define Certainty of Net Benefit for Healthcare
~ An international working group publishes concepts to redefine the approach to clinical recommendations ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — June 10, 2019 — On Tuesday, June 4, 2019, BMJ Open published an open access paper which defines the “certainty of net benefit” as a proposed method to report the impact of clinical recommendations. The report follows two years of development and deliberation within the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) Working Group, an international collaborative that defines the most widely used method for expressing the certainty of evidence and strength of recommendations in clinical practice guidelines.

The paper’s lead author, Brian S. Alper, MD, MSPH, FAAFP, is the founder of DynaMed®, a point-of-care information resource for healthcare professionals that provides a synthesized and curated summary of the best current evidence and guidelines, and the Vice President of Innovations and Evidence-Based Medicine Development for EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO), a company that is developing a prominent role in solving some of the greatest challenges in healthcare decision-making.

Defining Certainty of Net Benefit: A GRADE Concept Paper describes in detail how a guideline developer or other information provider reporting evidence and guidance for healthcare can explicitly determine and express the certainty that the benefits outweigh the harms for a specific decision. EBSCO also provides a free online calculator to allow developers to determine the certainty of net benefit without requiring advanced statistical software.

Peter Oettgen, MD, FACC, FAHA, FACP, Editor-in-Chief for DynaMed, Cardiologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and one of the paper’s eleven co-authors, states, “Our goal is to encourage transparent communication between clinicians and their patients. Over time, we hope to see an increasing impact of more quantitative approaches of determining the risks and benefits of treatments and tests for patients as they start to have a better understanding of their medical options and receive concrete recommendations from their physicians.”

Alfonso Iorio, MD, PhD, FRCPC, Professor in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact at McMaster University, a member of the DynaMed Executive Board, and another co-author of the paper, states, “This paper is a milestone in our journey toward a transparent and reproducible act of balancing benefits and harms across multiple patient important outcomes. This could transform the way we issue clinical recommendations. A more robust and reproducible link between evidence and action.”

The certainty of net benefit concept today is described from the perspective of a guideline developer speaking to a healthcare professional. The EBSCO Health Innovations team is actively evaluating systems to apply and introduce the concept for personal use to identify health improvement opportunities and support individualized shared decision-making tools.

EBSCO Information Services and Children’s Book Council Announce 2019 SEE-IT™ Award Winner
~ Farrar, Straus and Giroux Novel Selected for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Graphic Novels ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — June 5, 2019 — EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and the Graphic Novel Committee of the Children’s Book Council announced Speak: The Graphic Novel, written by Laurie Halse Anderson and illustrated by Emily Carroll, as the 2019 recipient of the SEE-IT™ Award.

Laurie is a New York Times Bestselling Author, a two-time National Book Award nominee, and the proud recipient of the Margaret A. Edwards Award winner given by the YALSA division of the American Library Association for her contribution to young adult literature. Emily Carroll is an award-winning Canadian comics creator. She has received several honors, including the Eisner Comic Industry Award and the Ignatz Award.

SEE-IT Award Juror Francisca Goldsmith says, “Seeing Laurie Halse Anderson’s contemporary classic Speak as a graphic novel in the sensitive art of Emily Carroll is to take yet an even more intimate step into the world of their character Melinda. Just as Anderson developed a protagonist who, after a traumatic event that leaves her mute, finds her way to communicating again, through art, Carroll’s grayscale images do indeed speak to readers. Melinda’s posture, expressions, and experiences are faithful to the original text while expanding Anderson’s verbal descriptions to show us exactly how Melinda’s world presents itself to her and through her recovery of voice.”

Developed by EBSCO and the Children’s Book Council, the SEE-IT Award recognizes the cultural and literary impacts of youth graphic novels and was designed to celebrate the year’s most distinguished graphic novels for young readers. Finalists, announced in April 2019, included:

    • Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation, adapted by Ari Folman and illustrated by David Polonsky (Pantheon)
    • The Cardboard Kingdom, written and illustrated by Chad Sell (Knopf Books for Young Readers)
    • Hey, Kiddo, written and illustrated by Jarrett J. Krosoczka (Scholastic/Graphix)
    • Illegal, written by Eoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin and illustrated by Giovanni Rigano (Sourcebooks Jabberwocky)
    • The Prince and the Dressmaker, written and illustrated by Jen Wang (First Second)

EBSCO Information Services Vice President of Product Management for Books, John Brennan, says the SEE-IT Award recognizes the impact that youth graphic novels have on young readers of all levels. “Due to their visual nature, graphic novels have the ability to immerse young readers in a way that other mediums may not. We are proud to support an award that celebrates the rise of this unique literary art form and its positive influence on readers of all ages.”

A total of 168 submissions from 42 publishers were evaluated by a panel of ten librarian jurors, with each submission weighted against the following criteria:

    • Literary quality
    • Interweaving of art and story
    • Lasting impact and distinguished contributions to youth literature
    • An audience range of K-12, or young readers through young adults

For more information on the SEE-IT Award, visit the SEE-IT website at: https://www.ebsco.com/see-it.

    Leiden / Boston / Paderborn / Singapore / Beijing – 3 June 2019

In collaboration with Professor Olivier Hekster and the Radboud University Nijmegen, Brill has released 14 volumes in the book series Impact of Empire in Open Access. Together, these titles form the complete collection of proceedings from the annual workshops by the International Network Impact of Empire. The workshops draw top contributions from various disciplines on topics that are still relevant today, such as migration, religion, cultural identity, and justice, focusing on the consequences of the actions and sheer existence of the Roman Empire in the regions it dominated.

“It is great news to have these volumes out in Open Access“, says Professor of Ancient History and Series Editor, Olivier Hekster. “An important goal of the network is to foster cooperation between disciplines and between scholars working in various academic traditions. Having the proceedings of all our previous workshops now publicly available will help to promote the importance of such cooperations and of course make the proceedings accessible to many people, who might not otherwise have been able to use them.”

Mirjam Elbers, Sr. Acquisitions Editor at Brill, adds: “Since the Network’s transfer to Brill in 2006, Brill has been committed to disseminate the workshops’ results in the Impact of Empire book series. Open Access enables us to introduce these results to an even broader audience, and heighten the impact of the important work by the International Network.”

Brill’s Open Access books are discoverable through DOAB and distributed free of charge in Brill’s E-Book Collections, and through JSTOR. To maximize the dissemination and ensure optimal indexing in library catalogues, Brill also includes these titles, free of charge, in the complete E-Book Collection of the Impact of Empire series. This new collection, which includes 34 volumes in total, is available as of today. Information and prices can be found here.
