    Leiden / Boston / Paderborn / Singapore / Beijing – 29 January 2019

In conjunction with the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History, Frankfurt, Brill will publish the new Open Access book series Max Planck Studies in Global Legal History of the Iberian Worlds.

The book volumes in the Max Planck Studies in Global Legal History of the Iberian Worlds publish research on legal history of areas which have been in contact with the Iberian empires during the early Modern and Modern period, in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa. Its focus is global in the sense that it is not limited to the imperial spaces as such but rather looks at the glocalization of normativities within the space related to these imperial formations. It is global also in another sense: The volumes in the series will pay special attention to the coexistence of a variety of normativities (multinormativity) and their cultural translations in different places and moments, decentering classical research perspectives and opening up for different modes of normativity. Within this broad spectrum, and due to the research in this field carried out at Department II of the Max Planck Institute, normativities stemming from the field of Religious Studies will receive special attention.

The series editor Thomas Duve, Director at the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History, comments: “In the last years, we observe a growing interest in the history of the formation of normative orders on a transnational scale in different disciplines. In the international academia, History, Law, and Political Science are turning more global or more historical in their orientation. Thus, it was important for us to find a publishing house of the best reputation which has the international and interdisciplinary visibility to publish studies on the histories of glocalizing normativities in an Open Access format.”

Jasmin Lange, Chief Publishing Officer at Brill, adds: "Brill highly values the opportunity to partner with the esteemed Max Planck Institute of European Legal History on publishing a book series in Open Access. The books we publish undergo strict peer review; together with the benefits of Open Access for the visibility and discoverability of publications, we are convinced this will contribute to the standing, reach and impact of the Max Planck Studies in Global Legal History of the Iberian Worlds."

The monographs, edited volumes and text editions in the series will be peer reviewed, and published in print and online. Brill’s Open Access books are discoverable through DOAB and distributed free of charge in Brill’s E-Book Collections, and through OAPEN and JSTOR.
