EBSCO Information Services and the American Library Association Award Five Scholarships for Librarians to Attend ALA Midwinter
~Scholarship Enables Librarians to Expand Professional Development Opportunities at National Conference ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — January 10, 2019 — EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) has awarded five librarians with $1,000 scholarships to attend the 2019 ALA Midwinter Conference in partnership with the American Library Association (ALA). The scholarships aim to defray the cost of travel and other expenses, helping librarians take advantage of the conference’s professional development and networking opportunities.

The scholarship winners include three first-time attendees from the United States:
    • Carla Myers, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Scholarly Communications, University Libraries, Miami University, Miami, Ohio

    • Danielle Osterdorf, Electronic Resources Librarian, Anschutz Medical Campus, University of Colorado, Aurora, Colorado (first-time attendee)

    • Jill Hofmockel, Teacher-Librarian, Iowa City West High School, Iowa City, Iowa

    • Vanesa Evers, Reading Specialist/Digital Projects Library Intern, Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (first-time attendee)

    • Vickie Coyle, School Media Specialist, All Saints Catholic School, Manassas, Virginia (first-time attendee)

As part of the application process, librarians were asked to write an essay about how they plan to make a mark on their profession, while facing some of the current challenges libraries are undergoing. They were also asked to share how attending the conference will contribute to their professional development. First-time conference attendee, Vickie Coyle of All Saints Catholic School, wrote about the importance of networking. “My goal in attending the Midwinter ALA Conference would be to network with exhibitors and colleagues to extend to NVCLA librarians innovative methods that would utilize digital tools to promote equitable access to resources. I strongly advocate that all students have access to high-quality learning materials with the most relevant content.” Applicant Jill Hofmockel from Iowa City West High School talked about her goals if she were to attend ALA Midwinter. “My hope is to return with a renewed plan and a toolkit for providing support and advocacy for all teacher-librarians in the state.”

EBSCO is dedicated to supporting the library community around the world and maintains a long-standing tradition of co-sponsoring scholarships to ALA conferences that provide funds for conference registration, travel and expenses. The scholarship recipients will be honored by EBSCO and ALA representatives during the conference at a scholarship breakfast.
