PLA Conference, PHILADELPHIA – March 21, 2018 – Gale, a Cengage company, is taking instruction and student engagement to the next level. Video and curriculum-aligned classroom tools have been integrated into selected eBooks on the Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) platform. Now teachers can incorporate content from these eBooks---text, video, classroom activities and more---into their lesson plans, creating a more effective and engaging learning experience for students, while meeting curriculum standards.

The enhanced eBooks on GVRL were created in partnership with librarians, teachers and advisors to meet appropriate curriculum standards. The videos were carefully selected and curated by Gale’s editorial team and embedded within an article or chapter in the eBooks, alongside prompts and related questions to directly support the content discussed within the article or chapter.

Every video includes closed captioning and an interactive transcript that highlights the corresponding text as the video plays. Additionally, the transcripts make the videos fully searchable. Clicking on a section of the transcript takes users directly to that point within the video. Users can even search within the actual video, helping them easily locate and jump to specific points of interest.

View Gale's video on the advantages of integrated video, here: http://bit.ly/2IGG4O2.

A visual indicator on the search results page lets users know which documents contain videos or users can limit search results to show only documents containing video. GVRL’s bookmark tool offers a stable permalink back to the document page, making it easy for librarians and teachers to share with students. The video player supports HD streaming and is compatible with all mobile devices.

“Teachers know the value that video brings to student learning and engagement. They want to include it in their lesson plans, but find it challenging and time-consuming to manually curate the content themselves and often turn to their school librarian for assistance,” said Douglas Enns, a middle school science teacher and advisor for Gale’s UXL Ignition Science: Collaborative Projects enhanced eBook. “The new enhanced eBooks on GVRL integrate video, instructional guides, templates and other curriculum-based learning materials, making lesson planning easier. This saves teachers time and enables them to focus on teaching, with classroom-ready content at their fingertips.”

Key new capabilities of enhanced eBooks for GVRL include:

    • Integrated Video: Video is carefully selected and/or created to support and enhance content, which makes concepts more meaningful to students.

    • Curriculum Mapping: Aligns learning materials, assessments and instructional techniques to a set curriculum.

    • Instructional Guide: Suggests ways the content can be used in the classroom, emphasizes connections to the curriculum, provides practical tips and more.

    • Critical-Thinking Questions: Questions posed for students to engage, analyze and evaluate the learning materials.

    • Classroom-Ready Activities: Aligned to specific curriculum standards, skill and level of rigor.

    • Worksheets: Printable templates align to text material and guide students in research and writing.

Gale has released four new enhanced eBooks on GVRL. Titles include:

    • UXL Ignition Science: Collaborative Projects: Includes 70 projects that promote collaboration skills and knowledge of the scientific method. With the demand for STEM careers growing each year, it’s crucial for students to develop these skills early on.

    • Animal Rights and Welfare: A five-title set that provides coverage of engaging and timely topics related to social issues around animal rights and welfare.

    • Unlocking Current Issues: A five-title set that provides foundational historical information to help students gain a better understanding of current events and controversial issues.

    • Genetics, 2nd Edition: Clear and comprehensive introduction to the many facets of genetics. Includes foundational concepts, key scientific and historical themes, ethical issues and advancements in science.

“Gale is taking student engagement and research content to a whole new level with the new enhanced eBooks on GVRL,” said Liz Mason, Senior Vice President of Product at Gale. “Integrating video and classroom tools into our eBooks for GVRL is moving us beyond traditional reference to creating content specific to teaching and research, making our eBooks as valuable in the classroom as they are in the library.”

Demonstrations of the new enhanced eBooks on GVRL will be conducted at the Public Library Association (PLA) Conference, March 21-23 in Philadelphia at the Gale booth #501.

PLA Conference, PHILADELPHIA – March 21, 2018 – Gale, a Cengage company, is making it easier for new entrepreneurs and existing business owners to find and access their library’s key business and legal resources. Gale Small Business Builder now provides integrated access to Small Business Resource Center, DemographicsNow and Gale LegalForms. Libraries that subscribe to one or more of these products now have access to additional business and legal content through Gale Small Business Builder, giving their patrons a direct path to the resources and tools they need within their business planning workflow.

Entrepreneurs need access to a wide variety of supporting information and data when they are in the business planning process. In many cases, they’re unsure about the type of information or data they need and don’t know where to find it. The new integrations in Gale Small Business Builder link users directly to the appropriate content, making business planning more actionable, enabling libraries to guide entrepreneurs to relevant resources with less staff involvement.

Naperville Public Library in Illinois uses Gale Small Business Builder as the foundation of the NaperLaunch Academy, a library program that offers coursework in entrepreneurship, where Gale Small Business Builder is used to help new startup entrepreneurs create a business plan. Kent Palmer, business librarian at Naperville Public Library believes the new integration will help streamline the process of finding and accessing information that entrepreneurs and small business owners require for business planning:

“Entrepreneurs using Gale Small Business Builder at NaperLaunch will appreciate the ease of accessing important subject information for their business plans. The guidance and resources from Small Business Resource Center and Gale LegalForms makes my job much easier as we guide startups through the plan development process. Importing demographic and legal information will help them build the best business plans possible. Gale Small Business Builder’s new integration makes the library experience for entrepreneurs significantly better than any incubator,” said Palmer.

Gale Small Business Builder includes integrated access to:
    • DemographicsNow: connects users with tools and a wealth of highly detailed demographic data that spans the entire United States, making it ideal for gaining consumer and market insight for opening or growing a business.

    • Small Business Resource Center: a comprehensive database that covers all aspects of starting and operating a business, including accounting, finance, human resources, management, marketing, taxes, and more.

    • Gale LegalForms: provides access to a variety of legal documents and offers the most robust collection of legal information available – including state-specific legal forms – that are helpful for starting or managing a new business.

“Having direct access to quality resources and tools is key to creating a successful business plan. Gale Small Business Builder’s new integration achieves this by making content easily discoverable and accessible,” said Leigh Ann Cusack, senior director of public and consortia products at Gale. “As entrepreneurship and small business rapidly grow, public libraries have become the epicenter for research and support. Gale Small Business Builder’s new integration provides access to resources that are vital to businesses and entrepreneurs, helping libraries drive economic development within their communities.”

Gale Small Business Builder’s new integrations will be available in April. Demonstrations of the new experience will be conducted at the Public Library Association (PLA) Conference, March 21-23 in Philadelphia at the Gale booth #501.

DULUTH, Ga., March 15, 2018 -- Equinox is pleased to announce that Thorold Public Library in Thorold, Ontario successfully migrated to Evergreen under the Sequoia agreement with the Libraries in Niagara Cooperative (LiNC).

Thorold Public Library was established as a lending library in 1895 and has grown over the years from 58 patrons to 12,525. Its migration added 75,626 bibliographic records to LINC. The project included the conversion of bibliographic, item, patron and all current loans and bills. It also encompassed the de-duplication of bibliographic records against the larger, LINC, database. To oversee the migration Equinox provided project management and software configuration in addition to remote Evergreen training.

“Migration can be a stressful process for both staff and library patrons,” said Joanne DeQuadros, Chief Librarian at Thorold Public Library. “The team at Equinox and our fellow LiNC libraries have eased the transition with their training, guidance and support. The migration team is always quick to respond and resolve any issues. They are a pleasure to work with and we look forward to our ongoing relationship.”

Libraries in Niagara Cooperative (LiNC) was established in 2010 between four public libraries and a college library. In 2017 the cooperative began resource sharing.

“It was very exciting to have the opportunity to work with Thorold during their migration to LiNC,” said Erica Rohlfs, Project Manager for Implementation at Equinox. “I absolutely enjoyed our calls together, and they were a fantastic, congenial group! I also appreciate the opportunity to gain more in-depth knowledge of the LiNC system and how it's configured.”
