Brill, the international scholarly publisher, announces their collaboration with the Harvard Semitic Museum on three book series.

Brill, the international scholarly publisher, announces their collaboration with the Harvard Semitic Museum on three book series. The three book series, Harvard Semitic Studies, Harvard Semitic Monographs, and Studies in the Archaeology and History of the Levant, will be published by Brill in close collaboration with the Harvard Semitic Museum. Through these series the Museum has published archaeological, historical, philological, and cultural studies of the Near East, many of which present the research of the department faculty and their students. This tradition will continue and, additionally, all the existing volumes, some dating as far back as 1912, will be digitized and made available both online and in print.

Editor-in-Chief of the series, Michael Coogan (Harvard University) said, “The Harvard Semitic Museum is delighted to be collaborating with Brill in the publication of our ongoing series Harvard Semitic Monographs, Harvard Semitic Studies, and Studies in the Archaeology and History of the Levant. We expect that the collaboration with Brill will increase our international reach, enable us to produce works with greater frequency than in recent years, and reduce costs and ease production details for our authors. We have revitalized our editorial board, and look forward to many good books in the years ahead!”

~ Overall Effective Publisher Price Increases Expected to be in the Range of Five to Six Percent ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — September 27, 2017 — The 2018 Serials Price Projection Report from EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) is now available. The report projects that the overall effective publisher price increases for academic and academic/medical libraries are expected to be in the range of five to six percent (before currency impact). EBSCO releases the Serials Price Projections based on surveys of a wide range of publishers and reviews of historical serials pricing data to assist information professionals as they make budgeting decisions for the renewals season.

The Serials Price Projection Report looks at market dynamics highlighting many issues that have driven the scholarly information marketplace for several years including: library budgets, Open Access, government mandates, shifts in political climates, new assessment and evaluation tools and alternative distribution networks. The emergence of organized piracy, which may grow as a disruptive force in the marketplace, is also a topic in this year’s report.

The healthy U.S. economy is a stabilizing force and academic library budgets in the U.S. are showing some improvements, but libraries in many countries outside of the U.S. are still seeing notable decreases in budgets. Even without budget decreases, libraries are experiencing serial costs outpacing budget growth. The U.S. dollar has weakened relative to some currencies and this will impact libraries paying in euro and pounds sterling as the strength of local currencies may eliminate some pricing increases for titles priced in U.S. dollars. The report recommends that customers add an additional two to four percent to the estimated price increases when budgeting. This provides added protection from the possible weakening of their currency between now and when subscription payments are made.

Although the serial price forecasts are based upon careful analysis, EBSCO recommends caution when using these projections, as they rely on historical trends and current estimates. EBSCO will update the projection information if economic conditions warrant it.

~ Scholarship Program Funds Travel and Expenses for Five Librarians ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — September 26, 2017 — Submissions are open for the 2018 EBSCO Midwinter Meeting Scholarship. EBSCO provides up to $1,500 to defray the costs of travel and other expenses to the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting, held in Denver, February 9-16.

Five scholarships will be awarded to librarians responding to the essay question:

Libraries have always identified with the mission of serving the needs of researchers and patrons but in a world where libraries may be underappreciated, how do you advocate for libraries and how do you think libraries can better advocate for themselves within their communities or institutions?

Scholarships are awarded annually to allow more librarians access to the professional development and networking opportunities that the conference offers.

An ALA-designated jury selects the winners based on their 250-word responses. Winners, jury members and ALA representatives are invited to a Scholarship Winners Breakfast that EBSCO hosts during the conference. Past EBSCO Jury Chair and ALA Executive Board Member, Julius C. Jefferson Jr. says, “EBSCO has been a great partner and supporter of one of ALA’s strategic objectives: encouraging professional development. The scholarship will provide selected ALA members with the funds necessary to further that objective, allowing members to strengthen their professional skill sets through content and networking opportunities. In a time of tight budgets and competing priorities, this scholarship will provide selected recipients with opportunities to experience one of the most exciting and engaging library conferences for sharing ideas and best practices.”

International publisher Brill launches a new journal, the Journal of African Military History, in collaboration with Professor Roy Doron, Winston-Salem State University, and Professor Charles G. Thomas, US Air Command and Staff College.

Brill adds the peer-reviewed journal to its growing publishing portfolio in Military History and in African Studies. The Journal of African Military History will initially consist of two issues per year, and will be available online and in print.
