Facet Publishing have announced the release of The Data Librarian’s Handbook by Robin Rice and John Southall.

This new book, written by two data librarians with over 30 years’ experience, unpicks the everyday role of the data librarian and offers practical guidance on how to collect, curate and crunch data for economic, social and scientific purposes.

Interest in data has been growing in recent years. Support for this peculiar class of digital information – its use, preservation and curation, and how to support researchers’ production and consumption of it in ever greater volumes to create new knowledge, is needed more than ever. Many librarians and information professionals are finding their working life is pulling them toward data support or research data management but lack the skills required.

Covering everything from handling, managing and curating data; data literacy; research data management policies; data management plans; data repositories; confidential or sensitive data; open scholarship and open science, The Data Librarian’s Handbook is a must-read for all new entrants to the field, LIS students and working professionals.

The authors said, “Our aim is to offer an insider’s view of data librarianship as it is today, with plenty of practical examples and advice. At times we link this to wider academic and research agendas and scholarly communication trends, while grounding these thoughts back in theeveryday work of data librarians and other information professionals”.

Robin Rice is Data Librarian at EDINA and Data Library, an organisation providing data services for research and education based in Information Services at the University of Edinburgh.

John Southall is Data Librarian for the Bodleian Libraries at the University of Oxford. He is based in the Social Science Library and is subject consultant for Economics, Sociology and Social Policy & Intervention.

ByWater Solutions, an open source community contributor and America's forefront provider of Koha support, is pleased to announce it has received a platinum award in the third annual Modern Library Awards (MLAs.) The MLAs were created to recognize the top products and services in the library industry in a truly unbiased format. Products and services were submitted in the fall using a simple application, and then were posted on a private site with an enhanced description and attendant materials. These products were batched into small groups and sent to the LibraryWorks database of more than 80,000 librarians at public, K-12, academic, and special libraries. Only customers with experience with these products/services in their facilities were permitted to judge the products/services, resulting in a truly unbiased score.

Each judge scored the product on a numeric basis from 1-10 on a series of questions regarding functionality, value, customer service, etc. ByWater scored a 9.0 out of 10.

Brendan Gallagher, CEO of ByWater stated:

IPSWICH, Mass. — January 5, 2017 —EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) has awarded five librarians $1,500 scholarships to attend the 2017 ALA Midwinter Meeting, January 20-24 in Atlanta. The scholarships are co-sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA). The scholarship recipients will be honored by EBSCO and ALA representatives during the conference at a breakfast on Sunday, January 22.

The EBSCO ALA Midwinter Scholarship defrays the cost of attending the conference and allows the librarians to benefit from the professional development and networking opportunities available at the conference. As part of the application process, librarians were asked to write an essay on the topic of “What will be the next game changer(s) for your library? How will your attendance at ALA Midwinter 2017 help you to contribute to the future of your library and libraries overall?

    The scholarship winners are:
    • Liya Deng, Social Sciences Librarian, Assistant Professor, Eastern Washington University Libraries, Cheney, Washington
    • Kerry Townsend, Library Media Coordinator, Columbia Public Schools, Columbia, Missouri.

    • Lisa Nowlain, Youth Librarian, Nevada County Community Library, Nevada City, California

Applicants were judged by an ALA-designated jury: jury chairman Elizabeth Nelson, Julius C. Jefferson, Jr.; Dorothy J. Owens, Pamela Jo Renfrow, and Sarah Sullivan.
