The international scholarly publisher Brill has adopted two libraries in Indonesia as part of its Adopt a Library Program. Last year Indonesia was Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair, celebrating the theme ‘Imagining 17.000 islands’ which lead to choosing West Kalimantan and South Sulawesi in Indonesia as two islands to benefit from the adoption.

The Adopt a Library Program involves a donation of scholarly books covering subject areas in the Humanities, Social Sciences, International Law and Biology. Each year the company donates a collection of frontlist titles to one or more libraries in developing and emerging countries. This year’s adopted libraries are Tanjungpurah University in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, and Halu Oleo University in Kendari, South Sulawesi.

The formal handover at Tanjungpura University took place in the presence of the Rector professor Thamrin Usman, followed by the workshop ‘How to get your research published internationally’, co-presented by Mrs. Liesbeth Kanis, Asia Business Development Manager at Brill, and Dr Susi Moeimam, who is a Brill author and journal editor, for a.o. the Journal of Humanities and Humanities of South East Asia and Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia.

Prof. Thamrin Usman, Rector of Tanjungpura University, delivered his gratitude for Brill’s support towards higher education in Indonesia, especially in West Kalimantan, by saying: ”Hopefully, this can act merely as a beginning of future collaboration between Brill and Tanjungpura University.”

Mrs. Liesbeth Kanis, who is responsible for Brill’s Developing Countries Program, is delighted about the adoption and partnership with Tanjungpura University: ”We are keen to establish relations with such a growing and forward-thinking university. They already have some international collaborations in place and are actively encouraging their academic faculty members to publish in English and internationally, providing language courses to support them. We hope that our resources in International and Criminal Law and Biology, particularly ecology, biodiversity and forestry, will strengthen their core research areas to help support the local communities.”

Dr Susi Moeimam is pleased to support the endeavours of Tanjungpura University in increasing the number of academic publications in accredited journals. “Informing Indonesian academics about the requirements to publish internationally will hopefully increase the number of publications in accredited journals and support the dissemination of research done by Indonesians to a wider international audience.”

The handover and workshop at Halu Oleo University will take place later this year to coincide with the
Indonesian International Book Fair this Autumn.
