October 22, 2013, Medford, New Jersey—Information Today, Inc. (ITI) announced the publication, in print and ebook editions, of Personal Archiving:Preserving Our Digital Heritage, edited by Donald T. (Don) Hawkins with a foreword by Brewster Kahle.

Hawkins explained that while libraries, museums, historical societies, and other cultural institutions have traditionally borne primary responsibility for archiving culturally significant creative works, information, and artifacts, advances in digitization, data storage, and retrieval technologies now allow the average person to build his own robust personal archive. The result has been the emergence of a new breed of archivist who uses low-cost and, in many cases, free digital tools and services to create enduring archives of personal and familial legacy materials—in essence, to preserve his digital heritage.

In Personal Archiving, Hawkins and 15 expert contributors present the most thorough exploration of the emerging field to date, addressing a range of key topics and innovative projects, including: archiving individual and family histories; new and nascent services and software products; social media and email applications; legal issues including digital inheritance and privacy; evolving formats and media considerations; academic research projects; Library of Congress initiatives; the pioneering role of the Internet Archive; research at Microsoft; and case studies of personal digital archiving in practice.

“This thorough examination of the world of digital archiving is an excellent resource for anyone, personally or professionally, who is responsible for preserving their personal and collective stories,” said Cherilyn P. Fiory, director of the Upper Dublin (PA) Public Library. “It emphasizes the importance of capturing and preserving our stories and the resulting complications, particularly since the digital realm is so impermanent.”

“This timely book brings together various approaches to the digitization, collecting, preservation, and presentation of personal archives,” according to Kahle, digital librarian and founder of the Internet Archive. “Excitement is growing as researchers learn from one other and welcome the type of sharing culture that comes before commercial players enter a field. Pioneering user interfaces are being proposed for existing digital collections, and methods are being developed that would collect our digital legacy from websites and services. As new approaches and products emerge in this young and increasingly critical field, we have much to look forward to. Personal Archiving is a great place to begin the journey.”

Editor Donald T. Hawkins is a writer, blogger, speaker, and long-time information industry observer whose distinguished career included 15 years in the AT&T Bell Laboratories Library Network, where he was honored for his pioneering contributions in end-user searching. He is the author of hundreds of articles and a two-time winner of the UMI/Data Courier Award for excellence in writing.

Personal Archiving: Preserving Our Digital Heritage (320 pp/softbound/$49.50/ISBN 978-1-57387-480-9) is published by Information Today, Inc. (ITI) and is available wherever quality books and ebooks are sold. About ORCID
ORCID (http://orcid.org) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing an open registry of unique person identifiers for researchers and scholars, and to working collaboratively with the research community to embed ORCID identifiers in workflows. ORCID identifiers connect researchers and scholars with their contributions by incorporation into the metadata of publications and other works. ORCID was founded in 2010, a product of conversations among publishers, research funders, professional associations, universities, repositories, researchers, and data providers, who together determined that to solve the name ambiguity problem in scholarly and research communication required an organization that represented the entire research community without proprietary interest. ORCID spans sectors, disciplines, organizations, and nations. It is a community-driven effort to implement a standard and persistent representation of an individual contributor’s name, and to link that standard to others, such as document and dataset identifiers, research sample identifiers, grant identifiers, association membership, other person identifiers, and other research activities as determined by the community. Together these linkages support attribution and discoverability across the research and scholarly community.

Mill Valley, Calif.—The Mill Valley Public Library has been awarded a $15,000 grant that will allow it to take first-person narrative to the next level in a ground-breaking program that gives participants the chance to be creators, not just consumers, of great stories. The program, Naked Truth: Connect, Create, Contribute (NT:CCC), brings together the best of story-centric programs like This American Life, StoryCorps and the Moth under one umbrella, while also providing guidelines and ideas for other public libraries interested in creating similar initiatives.

The grant from the California State Library in partnership with the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services allows the Mill Valley Public Library to expand upon its popular true storytelling series, Naked Truth. The series, which debuted in 2011, features selected storytellers taking center stage in the Main Reading Room of the Mill Valley Public Library to tell true, unscripted stories. These live performances currently take place after hours three times a year and are attended by approximately 300 people each.

The new program, NT:CCC, includes the live Naked Truth performances and introduces two new components: a series of storytelling workshops and an online repository for Naked Truth stories as well as a how-to toolkit for other libraries.

"We pitched this three-part program because Naked Truth has received unprecedented and overwhelmingly positive feedback centered around three areas: how Naked Truth has been a dynamic force in bringing people together as a community; how people want to participate more fully in storytelling; and how their perceptions about what a library can offer its public have changed,” said Cara Brancoli, curator of Naked Truth and Head of Reference at the Mill Valley Public Library.

Naked Truth: Connect is the new name for the series of live storytelling events, while Naked Truth: Create provides digital and live storytelling workshops open to the public. These workshops invite participants to share personal tales and creative thoughts, enhancing them either via digitized images and sound or through learning how to tell a riveting story live. The digital storytelling workshops will be led by moderators from the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkeley, while the live storytelling workshops will be led by a cohort of talented veterans from the famed Porchlight storytelling series in San Francisco.

Finally, Naked Truth: Contribute is the new website found at http://millvalleylibrary.net/nakedtruth. All of the stories produced through NT:CCC will be featured on this site, along with those stories told through earlier Naked Truth events. By February 2014, the website will also feature the online toolkit for other libraries. The toolkit will include instructions and timelines for starting a program, templates for publicity, guidelines for running a successful program, and other information and advice. The toolkit is intended to be a dynamic resource to which libraries will be able to contribute their own successful practices and experience.

“Historically, libraries have been places that fostered solitary introspection,” said Brancoli. “What makes this program so special is that it expands on that individual experience and allows people to share in their common humanity.”

The California State Library grant will fund the official first run of NT:CCC, which will debut with a live performance of Naked Truth: Connect on Friday, October 18th and will conclude in February 2014. The Library hopes to continue all Naked Truth programming after this time.

Note: This project is supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

North Bethesda, MD, October 17, 2013- The Dundy County Public Library, located in Benkelman, NE, has joined the Pioneer Consortium and will participate in the Pioneer LibLime union catalog for all collection and patron management services.

The Dundy County Public Library staff will work with LibLime Project Managers to migrate bibliographic, item, and patron data from its legacy ILS system. Dundy County Public Library will enjoy autonomy within the LibLime Koha union catalog, as LibLime Koha includes support for local ownership of patron records, local ownership of items records linked to communal bibliographic records, and OPAC group searching for pre-designated collections. Dundy patrons will also benefit from other functionality in the software sponsored by Pioneer, such as Enriched EDI for acquisitions and expanded fines and fees support in circulation.

About the Dundy County Public Library
The present-day Dundy County Public Library was founded in 1932 as the Benkelman Women’s Club Library. Five years later, the library was moved to a room in the courthouse and operated by Women’s Club volunteers. With some additional funding secured, the Benkelman Women’s Club secured a lease in the Municipal Building for the library, where it was moved to in 1957 and renamed the Dundy County Library. The Dundy County Public Library has remained in the Municipal Building since the 1950s and continues to serve the residents of Dundy County, Nebraska.

    About the Pioneer Consortium
The Pioneer Consortium continues to expand the number of members that share the LibLime Koha union catalog. The successes of the early members of the consortium are noticed by more and more libraries around the state and the consortium membership continues to grow. One of the main attractions is access to the LibLime Koha union catalog.

    About LibLime - PTFS
LibLime – PTFS is the global leader in providing support for the Koha open source ILS. Rather than sell software licenses for static, hard-to-customize software products, the PTFS LibLime Division educates libraries about the benefits of open source, enabling them to make choices about how best to provide their communities and staff with better technology services. The PTFS LibLime Division then facilitates deployment of Koha in libraries by providing outstanding consulting, development, implementation, and support/hosting for libraries of all types and sizes.
