~Daily Updates, Clinical Coverage and an Evidence-Based Approach Helps DynaMed® Outrank Other Resources in a New Survey of Ten Decision Support Tools ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — October 2, 2012 — DynaMed® has ranked highest among ten online clinical resources in a new study in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology. The resources were evaluated in three areas — timeliness of content updating, breadth of coverage and the quality of evidence reporting and according to the report, DynaMed, “consistently ranked near the top of each category.” (J Clin Epidemiol. 2012 Sep 10) DynaMed rated first in timeliness (“For timeliness of updating...the findings matched for the highest ranked text, DynaMed”), third in breadth of coverage and second in quality of evidence reporting. No other decision support tool collectively scored in the top three in each area surveyed.

DynaMed Editor-in-Chief, Brian S. Alper, MD, MSPH, FAAFP, says the study is further evidence that DynaMed is meeting the needs for which it was designed — to provide the most useful information to healthcare professionals at the point of care. “DynaMed provides rapid access to the best available evidence with daily updates and alerts to practice-changing updates. DynaMed accomplishes this by systematically monitoring, evaluating, and summarizing evidence using explicit, transparent processes to provide a critical appraisal of the most useful clinically relevant information.”

Clinical point-of-care resources such as DynaMed are necessary for clinicians to access the best available evidence for thousands of clinical topics. DynaMed is updated daily and can be integrated into any EMR system. DynaMed is used by more than half a million clinicians in over 125 countries. More than 4,000 physicians and other healthcare professionals across 60 specialties contribute to the resource and more than 200,000 medical articles are summarized in DynaMed — providing doctors and other healthcare providers with access to the latest clinical evidence.

    Additional Studies Rating DynaMed
DynaMed was also rated highest it its category by healthcare providers in a report on clinical decision support resources by KLAS, a research firm that specializes in monitoring and reporting the performance of healthcare vendors. According to the report, DynaMed was rated, “10 points higher in KLAS than any other disease reference product in the study.” Survey respondents indicated that DynaMed excelled in the credibility of the information it provided and in the relevance of its information and bested the other two resources in 24 of 25 measures. In direct comparison to the other two resources classified as disease reference tools, DynaMed outscored them with a total score of 91.2—10 points higher than the other resources. DynaMed also came out on top in a study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) (http://www.bmj.com/content/343/bmj.d5856.full). The BMJ study looked at how quickly five point-of-care products updated new evidence. DynaMed was shown to be the most current point-of-care reference tool. The study determined that, “DynaMed clearly dominates the other products.” (BMJ 2011 Sep 23) In the British Medical Journal study, DynaMed was shown to be at least 78% faster and as much as 97% faster at including evidence than the other resources in the study; “DynaMed has an updating process that markedly led the others.” (BMJ 2011 Sep 23)

A study published in the Journal of the Medical Library Association (J Med Libr Assoc 2011 Jul;99(3):247)(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21753917) tested DynaMed against seven other point-of-care resources with similar results. Also without the knowledge of database publishers, librarians in Texas tested these resources by selecting the top 10 diagnoses and monitored each tool for frequency of updates on these topics. The average number of days between updates in the treatment information was 19 for DynaMed and between 199 and 449 for all the other resources.
