DUBLIN, Ohio, January 18, 2012—The University of Delaware Library has selected OCLC WorldShare Management Services as its Web-based cooperative library management system for metadata management, acquisitions, circulation, discovery, license management and workflow improvements. The University of Delaware Library is the first member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to join the OCLC WorldShare Management Services community.

The University of Delaware Library will implement OCLC WorldShare Management Services, including the OCLC WorldShare License Manager, by the summer of 2013. The new “cloud-based” system will increase effectiveness and better utilize the Library’s vast resources, according to the University.

In 2008, the Library was one of the first institutions to implement WorldCat Local, OCLC’s Webscale discovery and delivery service. Since then, 29 ARL libraries have implemented WorldCat Local.

“OCLC has a long and distinguished history of supporting libraries in their role of bringing information to users,” said Susan Brynteson, Vice Provost and May Morris Director of Libraries, who has been involved with the OCLC cooperative for many years. “The University of Delaware Library is delighted to be at the forefront in this next-generation of library services.”

“OCLC’s Webscale solution represents transformative change,” said Gregg A. Silvis, Assistant Director for Library Computing Systems, University of Delaware. “Libraries have been working toward this type of solution for years. Taking routine library functions to the cloud will reduce duplication of loading records locally, and eliminates the need for maintaining local systems. In addition, as the first academic research library in the U.S. to implement OCLC WorldShare Management Services, the Library is glad to have the opportunity to develop these services to help meet the needs of other research libraries.”

Tom Apple, Provost of the University of Delaware, stated, “The implementation of WorldShare Management Services demonstrates the commitment of the Library to provide first-rate research services to the faculty and students of the University of Delaware.”

The University of Delaware Library will have an improved means for getting users to resources of all types and formats, according to Silvis. “WorldShare Management Services will provide the Library the opportunity to conduct careful analysis of our workflows across the library.”

“We at OCLC greatly appreciate the University of Delaware’s willingness to work with the OCLC cooperative in innovative ways that advance research, scholarship and education,” said Jay Jordan, OCLC President and CEO. “We look forward to working with the staff of this important research library in implementing a new cooperative model that will benefit students, faculty and librarians.”

Andrew Pace, OCLC Executive Director of Networked Library Services, explained that the cooperative works collaboratively with the membership to ensure that services have meaning to and impact on the library community. “The University of Delaware Library will be invaluable in helping OCLC shape and enhance WorldShare Management Services.”

Libraries using OCLC WorldShare Management Services lower the total cost of ownership for their library’s management and free staff time for higher-priority services. These services provide a Web-based environment that streamlines cataloging, acquisitions, license management and circulation. OCLC WorldShare Management Services enable libraries to share infrastructure costs and resources, as well as collaborate in ways that free them from the restrictions of local hardware and software.

In 2010, OCLC announced that it was making OCLC WorldShare Management Services available to a group of early adopters. OCLC WorldShare Management Services was released for general availability July 1, 2011. There are currently 33 libraries using OCLC WorldShare Management Services; and 171 libraries worldwide have committed to the new service.

More about OCLC WorldShare Management Services can be found on the OCLC website at http://www.oclc.org/webscale/.

IPSWICH, Mass. — January 18, 2012 — The creators of Points of View Reference Center™ (POV) from EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) have released the Points of View Debate Blog — a forum for students to discuss topics in the news and debate them with their peers. The blog is a free companion service for schools subscribing to EBSCO’s Points of View Reference Center.

Students can access Points of View Debate Blog directly from their library’s Points of View Reference Center database, gaining the ability to both research topics and voice opinions about them. Additionally, a corresponding Twitter account, @PointsofView_EP, will direct users to the blog website (http://ebscohost.com/pov-blog) and provide an avenue for discussion.

A $200 prize will be awarded monthly to the student submitting the most thought-provoking and well-crafted comment to that month’s blog topic. Product Manager for Points of View Reference Center, Kathleen Luz, says the blog is designed to provide a forum for wider debate and the award is designed to provide incentive and recognition. “We want students to generate the conversation using their research and debating skills. With the blog, they can make use of the valuable resources in Points of View Reference Center and really respond to topics that are being presented.”

Points of View Reference Center offers users information about compelling news topics each month, and explores the basics of debate. Points of View Debate Blog takes the next step and invites users to join the discussion and share their views, building on knowledge gained from using the reference center.

A monthly e-newsletter also accompanies the blog. It will highlight the winner of the best student commentary, and preview the next month’s Points of View Debate Blog topic. It will also keep subscribers up to date on announcements about the service.

Points of View Reference Center helps students research their opinions and develop persuasive arguments across subject areas, for their own debates and research papers. Using a unique format, it presents a searchable collection of the most important social, political and cultural moments of the era. DUBLIN, Ohio, January 16, 2012—OCLC has announced the launch of OCLC WorldShare License Manager, a new service to help libraries meet the increasing challenges and complexities of electronic resource management.

OCLC WorldShare License Manager offers a unique solution in that it brings together the two key features of electronic resource management—knowledge about licenses that govern their purchase and use, and linking technology that connects users to needed content in a single place.

Built on the OCLC WorldShare Platform and WorldCat knowledge base, License Manager helps library staff more effectively manage the selection, purchase and availability of databases and e-resources. This new service consolidates link resolution, subscriptions, licenses, vendor information, access and rights management to enable Webscale management, discovery and delivery of licensed and electronic resources.

License Manager is supported as a stand-alone service that integrates with other library management systems or can be integrated with OCLC WorldShare Management Services. License Manager resides on the OCLC WorldShare Platform that allows library staff and others to create applications to enhance current features and bridge information to other systems.

“WorldShare License Manager offers a new approach to cooperative library management of electronic collections,” said Andrew Pace, Executive Director for Networked Library Services at OCLC. “Electronic resource management can be complex and frustrating, especially while trying to maintain a comprehensive collection. And libraries that include License Manager as part of their OCLC WorldShare Management Services will gain centralized budgeting, ordering and receiving workflows related to licensed resources. And library staff will save additional time by managing access to all library resources in a single location—the WorldCat database.”

The WorldCat knowledge base holdings that power the License Manager’s linking functionality synchronize automatically with WorldCat. Once a library’s local data is present in the WorldCat knowledge base, that information automatically updates appropriate records in WorldCat.

License Manager also includes a globally maintained vendor information center and provides “license templates” for global management of public and shared licensing terms by staff at all participating libraries. Cooperative contributions to this resource of vendor information means that library staff have access to a richer repository of vendor data than they normally have at the individual library level.

Customizable workflows included in License Manager accommodate many aspects of electronic resource management, such as:

    • Negotiation of licenses with content providers
    • Evaluation of trial subscriptions
    • Registration and configuration of access credentials.

In addition, License Manager will in the future include the analytics that can better inform library management decisions and collection development, making the most of investments and budgets. The COUNTER-compliant statistics, which are currently available in the OCLC statistics portal at www.stats.oclc.org, will be expanded to include aggregated reports on collections associated with those profiled in the License Manager.

“The way I’d describe OCLC License Manager is it’s a purpose-built license manager,” says Elliot Polak, Head of Library Technology, Norwich University. “It’s an ERM that streamlines workflow.”

The OCLC WorldShare License Manager is available as an annual subscription service. More about the License Manager is on the OCLC website at http://www.oclc.org/webscale/.
