EBSCO Discovery Service™ to be Incorporated into University’s 2011-2012
    Information Literacy Programs ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — December 15, 2011 — Özyeğin University in Turkey has selected EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS) from EBSCO Publishing as its new generation search tool. The library saw a need to provide a seamless and easy way to navigate its electronic resources and EBSCO Publishing's discovery service fit that need precisely. EDS creates a unified index of an instution's information resources and is able to provide users with an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content with a single search interface.

Özyeğin University was ready to take advantage of new generation search tools and wanted to maximize the usage of its collections to support the university’s learning, teaching and research activities. Gülçin Cribb Director of Libraries at Özyeğin University says librarians looked at other services but EDS provided the key features they were looking for. “EDS provides our users with a user-friendly and familiar interface that filters results to reach the most relevant resources in an efficient and effective way.”

EDS delivers a single interface for discovery of a library’s entire collection and powerful features to heighten user’s research experience providing them with everything they need in one place. Cribb says Özyeğin University will begin to promote EDS as the starting point for all of its student research needs. “The university plans to redesign its information literacy programs for 2011-2012 academic year to incorporate EDS as the preferred choice and starting point for research.”
Another deciding factor for the university was the positive experience working with EBSCO. The university subscribes to many EBSCO databases and has a long-standing relationship with EBSCO. Cribb describes the relationship with EBSCO a very positive experience. “EBSCO has always been willing to help with any issue and they continue to be customer focused.”
EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box-searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

The Base Index for EBSCO Discovery Service forms the foundation upon which each EDS subscribing library builds out its custom collection. Beginning with the Base Index, each institution extends the reach of EDS by adding appropriate resources including its catalog, institutional repositories, EBSCOhost and other databases, and additional content sources to which it subscribes. It is this combination that allows a single, comprehensive, custom solution for discovering the value of any library’s collection.

The EDS Base Index is comprised of metadata from the world’s foremost information providers. At present, the EDS Base Index represents content from approximately 20,000 providers in addition to metadata from another 70,000 book publishers. Although constantly growing, today the EDS Base Index provides metadata for nearly 50,000 magazines & journals, approximately 825,000 CDs & DVDs, nearly six million books, more than 100 million newspaper articles, more than 400,000 conference proceedings and hundreds of thousands of additional information sources from various source-types.

Birmingham, Ala. – Dec. 14, 2011 – In co-sponsorship with the American Library Association (ALA), EBSCO awarded five librarians $1,500 scholarships to attend the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Dallas, Jan. 20–24, 2012. As part of the application process, librarians were asked to write an essay on the topic: "If you could change anything about your current workplace or job responsibilities, how would you position them to meet future needs?"

The five librarians who were selected as winners are Jo Alcock, evidence-based researcher, Kenrick Library, Birmingham City University, Birmingham, UK; Angiah L. Davis, reference librarian, Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, Atlanta; Liz M. Kirchhoff, adult services librarian, Barrington Area Library, Barrington, Ill.; Kathleen Lehman, head librarian, Physics Library, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Ark.; and Kirby McCurtis, youth services librarian, San Diego Public Library, San Diego.

The winners outlined creative approaches for change unique to their libraries. Their ideas included literacy outreach programs in partnership with human service organizations, school reading initiatives, social media networking, and one-on-one librarian-to-patron consultations, with the common thread being stepping outside the library as “a physical building” to partner with and meet the needs of the community.

“If I could change my job in any way, I would strive to be more embedded in my community,” says Kirchhoff. “By being active participants in our community, we can provide convenient services where our patrons need them most.”

The applications were judged by a jury designated by ALA: jury chairman Julius C. Jefferson Jr., information research specialist, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; David A. Brackus, librarian, Jefferies & Company Inc., Houston; Elizabeth Nelson, knowledge analyst, UOP LLC, Woodstock, Ill.; Tobi Oberman, head of circulation, Skokie Public Library, Skokie, Ill.; Dawn J. Zeig, library media specialist, Malcom S. Mackay School, Mahwah, N.J.

The five winning librarians will join EBSCO and ALA representatives for a breakfast honoring the scholarship recipients during the conference on Sunday, Jan. 22. EBSCO is dedicated to supporting the professional development of librarians around the world and has a long tradition of co-sponsoring scholarships to ALA conferences, providing money to be used for conference registration, travel, and expenses. EBSCO will continue awarding scholarships in 2012 for the ALA Annual Conference, which will be held in Anaheim, Calif.

~ DynaMed Rated 10 Points Higher Than Other Products in New KLAS Report Surveying Customers of Clinical Decision Support and Reference Systems ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — December 13, 2011 — DynaMed®, a point-of-care clinical reference tool from EBSCO Publishing, has been rated highest in its category by healthcare providers. A new report on clinical decision support resources by KLAS, a research firm that specializes in monitoring and reporting the performance of healthcare vendors, rated disease reference tools in a number of categories and according to the report, DynaMed was rated, “10 points higher in KLAS than any other disease reference product in the study.”

In the KLAS survey, customers of each resource were surveyed in a variety of areas including credibility, relevance, electronic medical record (EMR) integration and influence on decisions, as well as standardization of care and how well the resource met the overall needs of users. Survey respondents indicated that DynaMed excelled in the credibility of the information it provided and in the relevance of its information and bested the other two resources in 24 of 25 measures. In direct comparison to the other two resources classified as disease reference tools, DynaMed outscored them with a total score of 91.2—10 points higher than the other resources.

Disease references such as DynaMed are used by clinicians at the point of care to access the best available evidence for thousands of clinical topics. DynaMed is updated daily and can be integrated into any EMR system. DynaMed is used by more than half a million clinicians in over 125 countries. More than 4,000 physicians and other healthcare professionals across 60 specialties contribute to the resource and more than 200,000 medical articles are summarized in DynaMed — providing doctors and other healthcare providers with access to the latest clinical evidence. Access to the latest clinical information at the point of care and within EMRs is having an impact on clinical decision support, which was the overall focus of the KLAS report.

Quotes from the report: Clinical Decision Support 2011: Understanding the Impact, 2011. © 2011 KLAS Enterprises, LLC.All rights reserved. www.KLASresearch.com

“DynaMed is absolutely the best point-of-care product out there. And EBSCO has class-one support. It is the best support in the country.”

“DynaMed provides us with the best evidence on the best research-driven healthcare given to a particular patient issue. It is an excellent clinical information resource.”

—Collected about DynaMed by KLAS in November 2011 © KLAS Enterprises, LLC. All rights reserved. www.KLASresearch.com

DynaMed Editor-in-Chief, Brian S. Alper, MD, MPH, says the KLAS report indicates that DynaMed is being used and respected by healthcare providers. “This report shows we have achieved and maintained excellence in our evidence-based processing and currency as well as ease of use. It is also gratifying to know that customers realize that we are able to rapidly respond to their needs.”

DynaMed also came out on top in an October study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) (http://www.bmj.com/content/343/bmj.d5856.full). The BMJ study looked at how quickly five point-of-care products updated new evidence. DynaMed was shown to be the most current point-of-care reference tool. The study determined that, “DynaMed clearly dominates the other products.” (BMJ 2011 Sep 23) In the British Medical Journal study, DynaMed was shown to be at least 78% faster and as much as 97% faster at including evidence than the other resources in the study; “DynaMed has an updating process that markedly led the others.” (BMJ 2011 Sep 23) More information is available at www.DynaMed.ebscohost.com.

    About DynaMed
DynaMed is a clinical reference tool created by physicians for physicians and other health care professionals for use at the point of care. With clinically-organized summaries for more than 3,200 topics, DynaMed provides the latest content and resources with validity, relevance and convenience, making DynaMed an indispensable resource for answering most clinical questions during practice. Updated daily, DynaMed editors monitor the content of over 500 medical journals on a daily basis. Each article is evaluated for clinical relevance and scientific validity. The new evidence is then integrated with existing content, and overall conclusions are changed as appropriate, representing a synthesis of the best available evidence. Through this process of Systematic Literature Surveillance, the best available evidence determines the content of DynaMed.
