EBSCO Discovery Service™ to be Incorporated into University’s 2011-2012
Information Literacy Programs ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — December 15, 2011 — Özyeğin University in Turkey has selected EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS) from EBSCO Publishing as its new generation search tool. The library saw a need to provide a seamless and easy way to navigate its electronic resources and EBSCO Publishing's discovery service fit that need precisely. EDS creates a unified index of an instution's information resources and is able to provide users with an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content with a single search interface.

Özyeğin University was ready to take advantage of new generation search tools and wanted to maximize the usage of its collections to support the university’s learning, teaching and research activities. Gülçin Cribb Director of Libraries at Özyeğin University says librarians looked at other services but EDS provided the key features they were looking for. “EDS provides our users with a user-friendly and familiar interface that filters results to reach the most relevant resources in an efficient and effective way.”

EDS delivers a single interface for discovery of a library’s entire collection and powerful features to heighten user’s research experience providing them with everything they need in one place. Cribb says Özyeğin University will begin to promote EDS as the starting point for all of its student research needs. “The university plans to redesign its information literacy programs for 2011-2012 academic year to incorporate EDS as the preferred choice and starting point for research.”
Another deciding factor for the university was the positive experience working with EBSCO. The university subscribes to many EBSCO databases and has a long-standing relationship with EBSCO. The Base Index for EBSCO Discovery Service forms the foundation upon which each EDS subscribing library builds out its custom collection. Beginning with the Base Index, each institution extends the reach of EDS by adding appropriate resources including its catalog, institutional repositories, EBSCOhost and other databases, and additional content sources to which it subscribes. It is this combination that allows a single, comprehensive, custom solution for discovering the value of any library’s collection.

The EDS Base Index is comprised of metadata from the world’s foremost information providers. At present, the EDS Base Index represents content from approximately 20,000 providers in addition to metadata from another 70,000 book publishers. Although constantly growing, today the EDS Base Index provides metadata for nearly 50,000 magazines & journals, approximately 825,000 CDs & DVDs, nearly six million books, more than 100 million newspaper articles, more than 400,000 conference proceedings and hundreds of thousands of additional information sources from various source-types.
