ByWater Solutions Welcomes Albert Oller as Development Support Specialist

ByWater Solutions, an open source community supporter and official Koha support company is proud to welcome Albert Oller as Development Support Specialist. Albert will be assisting in the support of the 300 plus libraries being supported by ByWater nationwide, as well as taking part in ByWater's in-house development projects.

Albert received an MLIS from Simmons College GSLIS. Prior to joining ByWater Solutions he worked five years with Ex Libris as an SFX Librarian managing the KnowledgeBase, and four years with EBSCO Publishing as a Bibliographic Database Designer. Education has always been important to me and my family, and I think libraries are the most vital facet of education for our society. To me, Open Source is the best way to incorporate a feeling of community and responsibility when we work to improve any existing structure. The Open Source commitment of ByWater Solutions can only help strengthen our sense of community in the library world. I'm excited to be a part of ByWater Solutions because now I can help pay-forward what I've gotten from libraries."

Brendan Gallagher, CEO of ByWater Solutions stated: “We are very excited to have Albert on board with ByWater! We are very impressed with his data skills, sense of initiative and attention to detail. ~ EBSCO Discovery Service™ Earns Award in Best New Service of the Year Category ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — November 10, 2011 — EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS) from EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) has been named the silver winner in Best New Service of the Year in Best in Biz Awards, the only national business awards program judged by members of the press and industry analysts.

EBSCO Publishing is the leading content provider for libraries, offering nearly 300,000 e-books, more than 350 full-text databases and the world’s most comprehensive discovery service, EBSCO Discovery Service. EDS creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box-searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

The Base Index for EBSCO Discovery Service forms the foundation upon which each EDS subscribing library builds out its custom collection. Beginning with the Base Index, each institution extends the reach of EDS by adding appropriate resources including its catalog, institutional repositories, EBSCOhost and other databases, and additional content sources to which it subscribes. It is this combination that allows a single, comprehensive, custom solution for discovering the value of any library’s collection.
Best in Biz Awards 2011 were presented in more than 30 categories, including Best Overall Company of the Year, Most Innovative Company of the Year, Executive of the Year and Best New Product of the Year. More than 150 entries were received in this year’s awards program, from an impressive array of public and private companies from a variety of industries, sectors and regions. The companies that won gold, silver and bronze awards in this year’s program represent the best in American business.
“We are pleased to be honored in Best New Service of the Year” said Ron Burns, Senior Director of Software Product Management for EBSCO Publishing. “The fundamental goal of EDS is to serve the growing needs of library customers and make end users aware of the quality content that their library can make available to them. We applied our innovative search technology to massive amounts of content in conjunction with creative user experience design as a solution to this common need in libraries.”
Winners of Best in Biz Awards 2011 were determined by scores from a panel of high-caliber judges from top-tier business and technology publications, as well as analyst firms, including: Accounting Today, AllBusiness.com, ECT News Network, eWeek Channel Insider, Financial Times, Fox News, Hartford Business Journal, Insight Media, Kelsey Group, King Features Syndicate, Lab Reviews, Network World, PC Magazine, Portfolio, Puget Sound Business Journal, Tech.Blorge, Tech-Gaming, Techtalk and Wired. The 20 judges on this year’s panel boast more than 470 years of combined experience and have written for a combined total of more than 180 consumer, business, financial, trade and technology publications nationwide.

Hernando County Public Library Goes Live on Koha with ByWater Solutions

ByWater Solutions, an open source community supporter and official Koha support company, announced today that the Hernando County Library, of Brooksville FL. is now live on their installation of the Koha integrated library system.

The Library's Koha installation went live in late September, and ByWater Solutions will be providing ongoing support and hosting services for them.

The Hernando County Library is made up of one main library and four branches, which house a collection of over 250,000 books, videos, periodicals and electronic resources.

Adam Brooks, Library Services Manager at Hernando County, commented on their decision to switch to Koha with ByWater:

"Here at Hernando County Public Library we had the luxury of having had some previous experience (mine) in using the Koha product through another vendor. Cost and functionality were our primary reasons for deciding to change from our proprietary ILS. We will save a considerable amount annually by switching products, and have found that our work processes have been streamlined significantly. As for ByWater Solutions, their reputation for customer service and their effectiveness in helping us to simplify the migration process were invaluable, and we couldn’t be happier with our vendor selection."

Brendan Gallagher, CEO of ByWater stated; " We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Adam and the staff of the Hernando County Libraries! It is exciting to see more and more Florida libraries adopting an open source solution and we are excited to have the chance to offer services that will benefit both their staff and patrons going forward."
