August 29, 2011, Medford, NJ—Information Today, Inc. (ITI) announced the premiere edition of Introduction to Information Science and Technology, a book edited by Charles H. Davis and Debora Shaw and published by ITI on behalf of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T).

Designed as a comprehensive introductory text for students of information science and technology, the book presents a clear, concise, and approachable account of the fundamental issues, with appropriate historical and theoretical background. Topics covered include information needs, seeking, and use; representation and organization of information; computers and networks; structured information systems; information systems applications; users’ perspectives in information systems; social informatics; communication using information technologies; information policy; and the information professions.

Introduction to Information Science and Technology was written by ASIS&T member volunteers using a dynamic, dedicated wiki to present their subject expertise and perspectives. All contributed material was reviewed, approved, and interlinked by the editors and a panel of subject experts. Planned for periodic publication in print, the wiki allows ASIS&T members to contribute their knowledge in order to continually refresh, enhance, and expand the book’s coverage and support this critical field of study.

More than 80 ASIS&T members contributed to the book’s debut edition, guided by editors Charles H. Davis, senior fellow and adjunct professor in the School of Library and Information Science, Indiana University at Bloomington, and Debora Shaw, professor and interim dean at the School of Library and Information Science, Indiana University at Bloomington.

Introduction to Information Science and Technology (288 pp/softbound/$59.50/ISBN 978-1-57387-423-6) is available directly from the publisher.
