~Agreement between Goodreads and EBSCO Publishing’s NoveList Division Brings Social Networking Elements into NoveList Products ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — June 22, 2011 — NoveList, a division of EBSCO Publishing, will begin incorporating reader ratings and book reviews from Goodreads into NoveList products thanks to a new agreement between the companies. The agreement leverages the content of Goodreads, the largest social network for readers, adding additional content to the most popular readers’ advisory service available.

The agreement brings together two companies that are dedicated to fostering a love of reading while sharing a belief that libraries have a key role to play in a community of readers. Goodreads has more than five million members and polls indicate Goodreads members have strong ties to libraries. In one poll, thirty percent of the nearly 17,000 respondents indicated that they went to the library for more of their books, eclipsing brick and mortar chain bookstores (twenty-two percent) and online stores (eighteen percent).

Independent market research indicated that NoveList is the most highly-rated readers’ advisory resource in public libraries. NoveList Select allows libraries to add NoveList content into library catalogs allowing users to leverage the library catalog to discover new books and similar titles in the library’s collection. The agreement now allows Goodreads content to be incorporated into that same user experience.

Vice President of Business Development at Goodreads, Kyusik Chung, says this agreement is the company’s first product specifically for libraries. “At Goodreads, we are passionate about helping people discover the next book they should read. The NoveList and NoveList Select products are the premier tools that libraries use to help patrons choose their next book. EBSCO Publishing is the ideal integration partner as we offer our 11 million book reviews and 110 million ratings to librarians and their patrons.”

NoveList founder Duncan Smith says the agreement brings together resources that are well matched to provide an even greater service to librarians and readers alike. “Goodreads and NoveList not only share an interest in reading and reading recommendations but recognize and value the role that libraries play in supporting and sustaining reading in their communities. I’m looking forward to not only having Goodreads’ ratings and excellent reviews in all of our products but continuing to work with them and our customers on how this relationship can best help libraries meet the needs of their readers.”

The partnership between NoveList and Goodreads not only provides additional information for readers searching the library catalog, the added information will help librarians answer one of their most frequently asked questions—what do I read next? Smith says librarians are always being asked for their recommendations. “With Goodreads we can point the user to thousands of readers who have read and commented on the books readers are considering.”

Dr. Mary K. Chelton is a professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at Queens College in New York. Chelton, a noted researcher and advocate for readers’ advisory service whose students are studying the use of social technologies in readers’ advisory says, “Goodreads and NoveList are two sides of the same coin with the reader's voice at the center. Combining their different but mutually reinforcing strengths for readers and the librarians serving them can only be a cause for celebration.”

Barry Trott, the head of adult services at Williamsburg Regional Library in Virginia says the combined resources serve both readers’ advisory professionals and readers. “The combination of NoveList and Goodreads is a great match. It combines the potency of expertise from librarians and literature professionals with the benefits of collaborative reader crowdsourcing. This will offer new opportunities for readers' advisors and readers to build on each other's strengths. I am excited about the possibilities that this coming together presents.” Williamsburg is an innovative library that is already using social technologies to reach readers. Williamsburg’s Blogging for a Good Book blog won ALA’s Louis Shore Award in 2009 and has also been referred to as the future of book reviewing. Williamsburg staff members have also authored several standard readers’ advisory print resources for Libraries Unlimited.

~ Full-Text Searching from SciVerse ScienceDirect Will Complement Subject Indexing and Abstracts Already Available in EDS for All Elsevier Journals ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — June 22, 2011— Full text from SciVerse ScienceDirect is being added to EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS) thanks to a new agreement from Elsevier and EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO). ScienceDirect, part of the SciVerse suite of search and discovery products provided by Elsevier, is a leading full-text scientific database with journal articles and book chapters from more than 2,000 peer-reviewed journals and 20,000 books and major reference works. ScienceDirect currently includes more than 10.5 million articles and chapters with nearly 500,000 added every year.

“We recognize that our users are accessing information in many different ways,” says Yukun Harsono, Senior Vice President, Search & Discovery, Academic and Government Markets at Elsevier. “The addition of full-text articles and eBook chapters from SciVerse ScienceDirect to EBSCO Discovery Service stems from our continuous commitment to ensure that the content we provide is available and easily found through the discovery platforms our customers use.”

President of EBSCO Publishing Tim Collins says the size and the scope of the content that ScienceDirect indexing provides combined with the ease of search that EBSCO Discovery Service offers end users should make a significant difference for researchers. “We have seen impressive usage statistics for content providers once they are searchable in EBSCO Discovery Service. Adding full text searching from Elsevier means EDS now has full text searching for the largest journal publishers in the world. EBSCO believes strongly that the best discovery experience is one that combines full text searching with searching of high quality subject indexing from controlled vocabularies. EDS is the only service with that approach.”

Elsevier joins a growing list of publishers and other content partners that are taking part in EDS to bring more visibility to their content. Partners include the world’s largest scholarly journal & book publishers including Elsevier, Wiley Blackwell, Springer Science & Business Media, Taylor & Francis Informa, Sage Publications, and thousands of others. Partners also include content providers, such as LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), JSTOR, ARTstor, Credo Reference, Oxford University Press, World Book, ABC-CLIO, and many others.

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box—searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

EBSCO Discovery Service is quickly becoming the discovery selection for many libraries (www.ebscohost.com/discovery/eds-news), and an obvious partner for content providers. Because the service builds on the foundation provided by the EBSCOhost platform, libraries gain a full user experience for discovering their collections/OPAC—which is not typical in the discovery space. Further still, in the many universities and other libraries where EBSCOhost is the most-used platform for premium research, users are not asked to change their pathways or habits for searching. There’s simply more to discover on the familiar EBSCOhost platform, and the same can be said for library administrators who can leverage their previous work with EBSCOadmin.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    Norcross, GA —June 21, 2011
Equinox Software is heading to New Orleans for the American Library Association Annual Meeting, but that doesn’t mean we will be taking it easy while in the Big Easy. In addition to being available at exhibit booth #550, Equinox staff members will be presenting programs and serving as panelists for discussions.
Equinox Project Manager Shae Tetterton will join Jennifer Turner from Minnesota State University and Melissa Lefebvre from Bibliomation as a presenter for “ILS Migration Project Manager's Jambalaya” on Saturday, June 25th in room 285 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. According to the presentation description, “Project management for an ILS migration is a spicy mix of insanity and mayhem sprinkled with a little library schooling and topped with a delightful mix of training, configuration, and supporting legacy systems. Come hear project managers share their experiences getting staff buy-in, migrating libraries to Evergreen, navigating pitfalls along the way and - most importantly - keeping their sanity while juggling an ever expanding list of job duties and responsibilities.”
Equinox’s head of support and implementation, Galen Charlton, will serve as a panelist for “Vendor Plans for Implementing RDA” on Sunday, June 26 at the Hilton Riverside. This forum will discuss the impact RDA will have not only on cataloging workflows, but on integrated library systems and what ILS vendors and support providers are doing to accommodate these changes. Charlton says, "The American Library Association Annual Conference is really about the librarians and their libraries joining together and sharing ideas to further the profession in service to our users -- and all of the really important events happen off the exhibit hall floor. We are proud to be part of that conversation".

Georgia Writers Association awards Terry Kay with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 47th Georgia Author of the Year Awards along with 24 other winners and finalists.

Terry Kay Shares a Lifetime of Experiences with Georgia Writers at GAYA

Kennesaw, GA, June 11,2011: “My passion for many, many, many years has been to celebrate the writing done in this state. I have been dismayed that Georgia writers have not had the kind of acknowledgement that our neighboring states give their native writers. This occasion tonight does this – gives recognition to our native writers.” Terry Kay addressed those gathered for the 47th Annual Georgia Author of the Year Awards onSaturday, June 11, 2011, where he accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award fromthe awards sponsor, the Georgia Writers Association.

Kay is the author of several popular novels including Dance with the White Dog which became a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie starring Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn. His novel, The Book of Marie won the Georgia Author of the Year Award in 2008 for best fiction. His latest book, Bogmeadow’s Wish, published by Mercer University Press, was released in 2011. Kay, a prolific writer, says he is more concerned with the reader than the writing.

It’s Not about You – It is about the Reader

Kay spoke to a crowd of nearly 200 writers and guests, telling them: “There are times I think the writing is overstated. It is reallynot about us. It is about the person that reads you more than anything else.”

Twenty-four awards were given in 12 genres to Georgiaauthors who published in 2010. Winners included Philip Lee Williams for his work of poetry, The Flower Seeker, and Joseph A. Skibell, for A Curable Romantic, as best fiction in Georgia. The growing genre of Creative Nonfiction produced winners such as first-time writer Craig Rikard for his memoir about his family’s struggle with drug addiction in Hidden Epidemic

This year the Georgia Writers Association, presented a finalist in each category with an award in addition to the winner of the genre. The finalist for First Novel was Jeffrey Stepakoff for Fireworks over Toccoa. The Fiction Finalist Award went to Joshilyn Jackson for Backseat Saints. The complete list of winners and finalists can be found on the Georgia Writers Association Web site: www.georgiawriters.org.The official Web site of the Georgia Author of the Year Awards is at www.authoroftheyear.org

The Georgia Writers Association recognizes Georgia's authors of excellence by presenting the Georgia Author of the Year Awards. The GAYA has the distinction of being the oldest literary awards in the Southeastern United States. The GAYA honors both independently published authors, those whose books are published by traditional publishing houses, and self-published authors.

The Awards have grown in prestige and participation since its inception in 1964 by the Dixie Council of Authors and Journalists. The GAYA changed hands in 1990 under the Georgia Writers Association and in 2006 GWA began a strong affiliation with Kennesaw State University's Department of English in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

In 2011 over 80 books were nominated for Georgia Author ofthe Year. The GAYA covers the traditional categories of Poetry and Fiction, while accommodating the growing Creative Non-Fiction genre. The guidelines are revised each year to parallel the changing literary marketplace.
