DUBLIN, Ohio, April 11, 2011—OCLC and Ingram Content Group Inc. will soon offer a new service option that will provide library users short-term access to e-books not in their collection through WorldCat Resource Sharing and ILLiad.

The new service option, to launch in the coming months, expands access to library content available through WorldCat Resource Sharing to include access to e-books from Ingram’s MyiLibrary e-book collection for a period of up to nine days. E-book loans are fee-based, set at 15 percent of the MyiLibrary price for access to the e-book. The fee is managed through the WorldCat Resource Sharing interlibrary loan Fee Management feature, a service that supports payment of resource-sharing services through the library’s OCLC invoice.

“As technology continues to change the way people access information, forward-thinking libraries are turning to innovative collection development and content delivery solutions to fulfill the needs of their patrons,” said Rich Rosy, Vice President and General Manager, Ingram Library Services. “Ingram is pleased to be collaborating with OCLC—together we are creating market relevant solutions to deliver more content to more patrons efficiently and cost-effectively.”

Using WorldCat discovery services, library users can find what they need and staff can request access to available e-books in Ingram’s MyiLibrary. OCLC is working with Ingram (holding symbol IDILL) to identify and attach holdings to the MyiLibrary e-books available to users.

To support this e-book access program, OCLC is adding a new “Alert” category in the request manager in WorldCat Resource Sharing and ILLiad to inform borrowing library staff that the record requires immediate action. The library user will have nine days from the date the e-book is shipped to use the link before it expires.

“This new option for short-term access to e-books offered through Ingram’s MyiLibrary is a significant step forward in the evolution of e-books in libraries,” said Chip Nilges, OCLC Vice President, Business Development. “As e-books become more popular with readers, OCLC will continue to explore new ways to expand access to this library content with a variety of content providers.”

This short-term access option delivers e-books to users quickly, so they can begin to use requested titles right away. Once a request is updated to “shipped” status, it is immediately available for use with no delays for shipping or the time required to pick up a requested print title. In addition, many users access e-books to obtain specific parts of information for research. For example, often a chapter or section of an e-book is all they need to use. The MyiLibrary interface lets users search full text of titles to quickly identify the sections they need.

Bethesda, MD - April 8, 2011 – Students at the University of Washington’s, Information School, will begin utilizing LibLime Koha this spring, in their Library Technology Systems course through LibLime's Koha with Class program.

LibLime will provide the class of approximately 20 students, with a hosted installation of Koha, free of charge. This will allow the students unlimited access and all privileges associated with the staff end of Koha as well as all OPAC functionality for the duration of the course.

“I came to your website ready to search for a contact I could bargain and plead with, to allow me to use a Koha Express instance in my class this spring. Imagine my surprise when I found that you had already thought of this, and put the infrastructure together for it, five years ago,” commented course instructor, Doug Erikson.

LibLime's Koha with Class program is designed to give library school faculty a chance to embed the use of an ILS into their coursework and curricula. Students gain practical experience with library automation software as they prepare to enter the library workforce. LibLime provides free support for these Koha with Class installations, and already there are dozens of faculty members throughout North America taking advantage of this program. LibLime is looking to expand the program overseas to support librarianship at an international level.

“I think this is a fabulous idea, and I very much hope that you are seeing a great payback as new professionals enter the field bringing with them a willingness to explore open-source and hosted solutions for library systems needs,” Erikson finished.

McLean, VA (April 6, 2011) – LogiXML, the pioneer of web-based business intelligence software, today announced that Purdue University Libraries has selected Logi Insight to track and analyze the usage of library resources, including e-resources, which represent the largest and fastest growing part of Purdue’s budget. Purdue joins Boston College, New York University, and Texas Tech University to adopt Logi Insight for Libraries (www.logixml.com/libraryinsight)

“Using Logi Insight puts us in a position where we can understand how patrons are utilizing e-resources, as well as physical resources,” said Paul Bracke, the director of technology for Purdue Libraries. “Like all academic libraries, we’ve seen demand for e-resources skyrocket in recent years, and we’re at a point where e-resources represent more than 80 percent of our budget. Getting insight into library utilization data is one of our top priorities.”

Logi Insight for Libraries was designed to help libraries track and analyze the usage of library resources that universities spend millions of dollars each year to maintain. The solution allows librarians to better justify their budget requests based on what is being used by students, staff and other patrons. Prior to this technology, most libraries have struggled to access valuable operational data which is spread out across multiple isolated data silos.

Logi Insight makes it possible for librarians and administrators to measure patron utilization of library resources, circulation data, e-resources, budget data, and other information that is unique to libraries.

“Logi Insight is the first solution that enables librarians to analyze resource utilization data in a way that allows them to make more informed budgetary decisions,” said Brett Jackson, CEO of LogiXML. “We are excited to be providing this capability to Purdue’s academic library system.”
