    Call for Papers (and apologies for cross-posting):

    The Code4Lib Journal (C4LJ) exists to foster community and share information among those interested in the intersection of libraries, technology, and the future.

    The Code4Lib Journal is now accepting proposals for publication in its 8th issue. Don't miss out on this opportunity to share your ideas and experiences. To be included in the 11th issue, which is scheduled for publication in mid September 2010, please submit articles, abstracts, or proposals at http://journal.code4lib.org/submit-proposal or to c4lj-articles@googlegroups.com by Friday, June 18, 2010. When submitting, please include the title or subject of the proposal in the subject line of the email message.

    C4LJ encourages creativity and flexibility, and the editors welcome submissions across a broad variety of topics that support the mission of the journal. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

    * Practical applications of library technology (both actual and
    hypothetical)
    * Technology projects (failed, successful, or proposed), including how
    they were done and challenges faced
    * Case studies
    * Best practices
    * Reviews
    * Comparisons of third party software or libraries
    * Analyses of library metadata for use with technology
    * Project management and communication within the library environment
    * Assessment and user studies

    C4LJ strives to promote professional communication by minimizing the barriers to publication. While articles should be of a high quality, they need not follow any formal structure. Writers should aim for the middle ground between blog posts and articles in traditional refereed journals. Where appropriate, we encourage authors to submit code samples, algorithms, and pseudo-code. For more information, visit C4LJ's Article Guidelines or browse articles from the first 9 issues published on our website: http://journal.code4lib.org.

    Remember, for consideration for the 8th issue, please send proposals, abstracts, or draft articles to c4lj-articles@googlegroups.com no later than Friday, June 18, 2010.

    Send in a submission. Your peers would like to hear what you are doing.

    Flexibility, SirsiDynix Relationship Recommend ITG to Canadian Library System

    Norcross, Ga. – May 17, 2010: ITG (Integrated Technology Group) continues its expansion into Canada with the addition of Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) to its customer roster. The third largest library system in British Columbia, VIRL is replacing existing self-checkout kiosks from another vendor with ITG XpressCheck™ units. The 38-location system will begin with 8 – 10 units in year one, gradually expanding the system’s self-checkout capacity.

    “We awarded the self check contract to Integrated Technology Group because of their flexible, cost-effective software and hardware options,” says VIRL systems services manager Elizabeth Wright. “On average, more than 100,000 items a month are checked out on our self-checkout stations,” she explains. “Our library customers have embraced the new technology.”

    Additionally, ITG technologies interface seamlessly with Vancouver Island’s SirsiDynix ILS. As a SirsiDynix Self Service Strategic Partner, ITG works directly with the company to ensure absolute compatibility, timely upgrades, and cutting edge functionality. The special partnership results in a host of technological and support benefits for SirsiDynix users.

    VIRL serves more than 400,000 people on Vancouver Island, the Queen Charlottes and the Central Coast (Bella Coola) through 38 branch libraries and a books-by-mail service. Administrative offices are located in Nanaimo, BC. Vancouver Island Regional Library opened its doors in 1936 as the Vancouver Island Union Library; it was the second regional library in North America.

    Central States Account Manager to serve the fund raising and financial development arm of group

    Norcross, Ga. – May 21, 2010: Candice Gwin Oliver, MILS, ITG Account Manager since January 2009, has been elected Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect for the FRFDS section (Fund Raising and Financial Development Section) of LLAMA (Library Leadership and Management Association), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). She received her MLIS from the University of Alabama in 2003 and had been regional administrator, South and West, for the St. Louis County Library and director of library services for the Kirkwood Public Library, both in Missouri, before joining ITG. Oliver was named a 2008 Library Journal “Mover & Shaker.”

    “When I was at Kirkwood I was active in marketing and programming,” explains Oliver, “and our director helped get me involved with LLAMA. They are experts in helping libraries engage with donors and endowments. It’s so important for libraries to think outside the box and look for other sources of funding besides taxes,” she adds.

    Oliver will serve as vice-chair from June 2010 to June 2011, and as chair the following year. In addition to various ALA offices, she has been active in the Missouri Library Association since 2006, currently serving as chair of the Public Relations committee. In 2007, she was named an Emerging Leader by both the ALA and the Public Library Association (PLA).

    “My work with ITG intersects with the work I did as a librarian, in that we’re all trying to find a way to provide more service with limited resources,” says Oliver. “My work with local and national library organizations keeps me informed and active so I can be a great resource and have access to new thinking about the profession.”

    ITG has several library experts on its staff, offering a unique real-world perspective to customers and prospects. These include Midwest Account Manager Patty Wanninger, MLS, with 25 years of library experience, and Senior Systems Engineer Michael Imsand, former Chief Technology Officer for the Georgia Public Library System.
